Villainess Level 99 Episode 9 Review: In the last episode, we saw Yumiella getting a dragon for herself. Let us look at how this episode went below.

Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord or Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99: Watashi wa Ura Bosudesuga Maō de wa Arimasen (悪役令嬢レベル99 ~私は裏ボスですが魔王ではありません~) is a new anime series based on the Japanese light novel series with the same name written by Satori Tanabata with illustrations by Tea.

Directed by Minoru Yamaoka, the script of the show is written by Fumihiko Shimo and character designs are handled by Hitomi Kaiho and Lo Ho Kim.

Mayu Maeshima lends her voice to the opening theme song, Love or Hate?, while Fairouz Ai and Rina Hidaka, embodying their respective characters, perform the ending theme song titled Suki ga Rebechi (好きがレベチ, Love on a Different Level).

I have tried my best to keep the review as spoiler-free as possible, but there are certain elements that I had to mention to give proper feedback.

Villainess Level 99 Episode 9 Review and Recap: Yumiella Is Enticed

Villainess Level 99 Episode 9 Review Patrick Has A Secret Girlfriend

Today’s episode starts with an interesting premise. We saw our villainess getting enticed to join the enemy nation by a spy. The neighbouring nation, fearing Yumiella’s powers, wants her to join them, hoping to use her if they ever go against the Kingdom of Valschein, which is where our heroin is from. The neighbouring Kingdom is also close to the domain of Margrave Ashbatten, meaning Patrick’s home. This means if Yumiella joins the neighbouring country, she will have to fight against Patrick at some point in time.

Now, this is a tough decision as this has been Yumiella’s dream all her life. She always wanted to escape her current place and go somewhere she would not have to think about being persecuted by the original heroine and her supporters.

But things are not the same anymore, and Yumiella too, is not the same anymore. Now, she has a friend who will be most in danger if she agrees to this proposition, thus, it is only natural that Yumiella completely denies this offer.

In this episode, we also see a healthy amount of development between Yumiella and Eleonora, who has already considered Yumiella, a dear friend. She is the only one with the guts to ask Yumiella for help in things that one would only ask a close associate. And Yumiella, even though pretends she is annoyed with this kind of arrangement, I believe she is secretly happy that someone other than Patrick considers her a normal girl rather than some crazy demon.

Patrick, on the other hand, is trying his best to level up his powers as he wants to be worthy of Yumiella, who said she prefers men who are stronger than her. And though becoming more powerful than her is unthinkable, Patrick still tries his best to improve himself as much as possible. The most hilarious part is when Yumiella suspects Patrick having a secret relationship and even voices her suspicions to him, who becomes visibly flabbergasted and upset about such wild theories.

Verdict

Today’s episode mostly focused on character development, as we see just how much Yumiella has changed. And it is not just her who became a new version of themselves, we see an apparent transformation in everyone who directly came in contact with Yumiella. I also like the fact of how self-aware our protagonist is, and she realises that she is not a normal being. I’m especially intrigued by the conclusion, as we might have some intense plot twists in the next episode.
