Villainess Level 99 Episode 1 Review: The Hidden Boss Enters the Academy

Villainess Level 99 Episode 1 Review: Villainess Level 99 Episode 1/Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99 Episode 1 premiered on January 9, 2024. Villainess Level 99: I May Be the Hidden Boss but I’m Not the Demon Lord or Akuyaku Reijō Reberu 99: Watashi wa Ura Bosudesuga Maō de wa Arimasen (悪役令嬢レベル99 ~私は裏ボスですが魔王ではありません~) is a new anime series based on the Japanese light novel series with the same name written by Satori Tanabata with illustrations by Tea. Directed by Minoru Yamaoka, the script of the show is written by Fumihiko Shimo and character designs handled by Hitomi Kaiho and Lo Ho Kim.

Mayu Maeshima lends her voice to the opening theme song, Love or Hate?, while Fairouz Ai and Rina Hidaka, embodying their respective characters, perform the ending theme song titled Suki ga Rebechi (好きがレベチ, Love on a Different Level). The series has been officially licensed by Crunchyroll, and Plus Media Networks Asia holds the licensing rights for the Southeast Asian region.

The story follows Yumiella Dolkness, who finds herself thrust into the world of Light Magic and the Hero, an otome RPG where she takes on the role of the clandestine boss. Determined to secure her survival, she dedicates her childhood to relentless level grinding. However, a twist of fate reveals an unintended consequence: Yumiella surpasses expectations, reaching the formidable Level 99 instead of the anticipated Level 10 for students. This overachievement not only attracts undue attention but also deviates from the meticulously crafted script of the game, setting the stage for unforeseen challenges in her reincarnated journey.

The first episode of the new series serves as an introductory one, providing a detailed view of the premise and how the story will move forward. Yumiella, having been reincarnated into a new world after her demise, discovers that it mirrors the very game she played in her previous life. She possesses a profound understanding of the game mechanics and storyline, being fully cognizant of her designated role.

The show’s narrative is exceptionally distinctive. The primary antagonist of the game expresses a desire to abandon the role of the villain and pursue a peaceful existence. This unconventional approach by the creator offers viewers a fresh perspective on how they perceive antagonists. Furthermore, it introduces an element of unpredictability to the script, leaving fans uncertain about what might unfold next, thereby maintaining the show’s captivating intrigue.

Nevertheless, the narrative unfolds effortlessly in the initial episode, providing the audience with a glimpse of the potential storyline. Additionally, the fresh perspective on the villain’s arc adds an intriguing layer. It’s noteworthy that the antagonist is portrayed not as inherently good, but as an indifferent character seeking a peaceful life. Unfortunately, her aspirations crumble as she inadvertently reaches the maximum level through diligent work since childhood.

The animation in this production is commendable, showcasing a high level of skill and attention to detail. The fluidity of character movements and the vibrant visual elements contribute to an overall enjoyable viewing experience. However, at times, the use of CGI becomes overpowering, detracting slightly from the seamless integration of traditional animation. Despite this occasional imbalance, the overall quality of the animation remains praiseworthy, with the CGI elements still adding a unique dimension to the visual storytelling.
