Prince Ui-seong’s stay in the palace is limited, and he moves to a residence near the palace. Meanwhile, Seong-nam prepares for his first lesson, and Hwa-ryeong is perturbed by the thoughts of the officials purposely making things difficult for him on the first day. Cue the hazing, but at least he has Prince Bo-geum by his side and eventually gains the other tutors’ praise.

At the same time, a marrying ban is imposed in the kingdom to find a suitable partner for the Crown Prince. Hwa-ryeong takes a personal interest in avoiding Queen Dowager’s interference. Consorts Ko and Tae’s alliance with Hwa-ryeong helps her narrow down the potential prospects. The Queen lays her eyes on Cheong-ha during her time outside the palace and is impressed by her wits as she sees her stand up for a widow at the market.

She arranges a meeting with Cheong-ha and is further taken over by her intelligence and thought process for women’s welfare. Queen Dowager also visits her father, the Minister of War, but her interests lie in the other two daughters. Cheong-ha seems to have no interest in participating in the selection as she already loves someone else. Cheong-ha reveals the portrait of the man she’s in love with to Hwa-ryeong, who’s shocked to find Seong-nam’s picture, and informs her that he is the Crown Prince. Hwa-ryeong also advises her to keep a tight lip about her prior acquaintance with the Crown Prince if she considers participating in the selection.

However, both the Royal Consort advise Hwa-ryeong against Cheong-ha’s selection as Minister Yoon has, after all, been a puppet in the hands of Queen Dowager since the beginning. As the eldest daughter barges into the house, she’s interrupted by Dowager to answer why she’s so keen on being selected as the Crown Princess. Recalling Hwa-ryeong’s words, she declares that she wants to rise to the highest position as the Queen.

Still, Queen Dowager has her play ready to manipulate everyone along the way emotionally and asks her to stand by her side. Minister Yoon is already aware of the impending doom Queen Dowager is concocting in her mind.

Grand Prince Muan has his heroic love saga to narrate to his brothers, even though they already have it memorised. He and Cho-wol continue as friends after everything that happened previously.

Physician Kwon is still a perplexing subject for Hwa-ryeong as he’s spotted in Hanseong and poisoned Ham-deok, thus fuelling the rebels cause by making it look like it was all the palace’s doing. Consort Hwang meets up with Kwon and asks for his help again, asking him about the poison he used for the former Crown Prince.

Queen Dowager believes she’s already won the case by gifting Seong-nam, “the worst wife”, Cheong-ha. All prospects for the selection make their way to the palace in front of Queens Hwa-ryeong and Dowager. Hwa-ryeong keeps up her act and pretends to be against Cheong-ha’s selection as Queen Dowager approves of her. Seong-nam keeps calm despite all the commotion in the palace, and eventually, Queen Dowager’s preferred candidate, Cheong-ha, the daughter of the Minister of War, is chosen, but he doesn’t know yet she’s also his mother’s choice.

Under the Queen’s Umbrella Episode 12 Ending

It’s revealed that Hwa-ryeong visited Cheong-ha’s family before the selection and promised she didn’t wish to sacrifice their daughter but had chosen her due to her outstanding display of wisdom. Also, lending an insight into how she used Queen Dowager’s power to appoint her as the Crown Princess, she hopes to keep her word regarding her safety in the palace in return for Minister Yoon acting as a shield for Seong-nam.

Cheong-ha begins her schooling in palace etiquette, and Hwa-ryeong helps her along the way to make things easier. The day of the royal wedding arrives, and Seong-nam is shocked to see Cheong-ha as she was announced as per Queen Dowager’s choice and leaves her side on the wedding night.

Cho-wol finally makes it to the palace under dire circumstances with a newborn in her embrace. Hwa-ryeong’s problems are nowhere out of sight as it looks like Grand Prince has a child.

Under the Queen’s Umbrella Episode 12 Review

A new side to the royal court is revealed in the latest episode with a royal wedding in sight. It’s different from the general image of contemporary weddings. Through this procedure, new courtly etiquettes are brought into the picture, again going hand in hand with other devious schemes being plotted in the minds of those in power.

Kdramas are rather famous for their coincidental epiphanies since time unknown. Still, the charm of Under the Queen’s Umbrella is that its storyline follows a trajectory threaded together by various subplots that converge on the same path seamlessly. This process is neither rushed nor does its result seem out of place.

Moreover, the show doesn’t put things out of sight after their supposed contribution to the story seems accomplished. Several bits about each character, or some familial dynamics between two or more characters, pop up sooner or later and add to the tension created by the plot. They’re not simply represented as tokenistic additions meant to add weight at the moment but are hinted at later as well.

Though the former Crown Prince is dead, his presence hasn’t been eliminated from the show as an issue of yesterday’s news. It has repercussions on the actions of the present and continues to vex Hwa-ryeong’s family, thus adding layers to the plot and not simply presenting a washed-up vision.

Under the Queen’s Umbrella Episode 12 is now out on Netflix.
