True to Love also known as Bo-ra! Deborah (보라! 데보라) is the latest romantic comedy-drama series on Amazon Prime Video. Co-directed by Lee Tae-gon and Seo Min-jeong, the K-Drama is developed by KT Studio Genie from a screenplay written by Ah Kyung. Broadcasted on ENA, it is produced by Lee Tae-gon, Lee Soo-yeon, Oh Nam-seok and Heo Min-ho.
The story follows Yeon Bo-ra, who under the name of Deborah, works as a dating coach & is a best-selling author. She has advice for everyone regarding dating and relationships but can’t say the same about her own love life. However, things might change when she meets a cold guy as her publisher, Lee Soo-hyuk, who doesn’t values the work of a dating coach. At first, they are at crossroads but slowly try to understand and get to know each other.
The ensemble cast of the show includes Yoo In-na as Yeon Bo-ra/Deborah, Yoon Hyun-min as Lee Soo-hyuk, Joo Sang-wook as Han Sang-jin, Hwang Chan-sung as Noh Joo-wan, Park So-jin as Lee Yoo-jeong, Koo Jun-hoe as Yang Jin-ho, Kim Ye-ji as Yeon Bo-mi, Lee Sang-woon as Yang Jin-woo, Song Min-ji as Su-jin, Kim Ji-an as Yu-ri, and Park Ri-won as Da-mi.

The Stellar Cast
Yoo In-na is the queen of rom-com as we have seen in dramas like Guardian: The Lonely and Great God or Touch Your Heart and many more. With her as the lead, it’s no doubt that the show is definitely going to be fun to watch, owing to the impeccable acting skills that make every character of hers, a favourite. Compared to her previous roles, Deborah is a much stronger character with an honest & warm heart.
Along with her, actor Yoon Hyun-min is also making a comeback after almost 3 years as a lead. He is best known for his roles in Witch at Court and Netflix series My Holo Love. Putting In-na and Hyun-min as the lead, you know there won’t be any awkward acting as both of them make you root for any character they play.
Also, a special mention of IKON’s Koo Jun-hoe, who has played a few supporting roles before but in this drama, he definitely looks like the second lead. From the small interactions, we got to see in the second episode, we know what an adorable goofball of a character he will be playing.
A New Perspective on Love
The show starts off with a fairly realistic portrayal of how people look at love or dating nowadays. A typical meet-cute scene happens in front of us, where two people collide while walking. If it was a show or a film, this is the moment that they will fall in love with, at the first sight. But in the modern day, they will just apologize & sometimes don’t even acknowledge it & keep walking.
The drama shows how in real life the endless concerns about life, career, the planet and whatnot consume our minds that we don’t have time to seek love. They also present the fact that less than 30 per cent of Korea’s five million adults are currently in a relationship. Dating and love are luxuries they can’t afford. That’s where Yoo In-na’s character brings in a fresh change, urging people to love.
As a dating coach, she understands the modern nuances of dating and based on that she presents the solution in a strategic way, which might actually help people going through the same concerns.
Comedy That Tickles the Funny Bone
Honestly, I started watching the drama because of In-na but didn’t have many expectations & thought it would be like any other cliche drama. But what really made me interested & felt like the episode ended in just minutes is the on-point comedy. Whether it was the contrary personality of Deborah who pretends to be fine with everything but daydreams about getting proposed to.
Or the ironic twist when Soo-hyuk turns out to be the guy from one of the stories sent to Deborah’s radio show & being branded as the bad boy. The one scene which really left a mark is when one of the characters forgets the name of the person they came on a date with & keeps calling them endearing nicknames which only angers them. On top of that, the restaurant staff serves a glass of water to help the girl cool down but gets dumped on the man’s head.
Also, if you are familiar with 2 PM Chan-sung’s work, then you would know how his presence on the screen just brings in all the laughs, like in the drama What’s Wrong with Secretary Kim. Similarly, here he plays Bo-ra’s boyfriend and just brings in all the giggles with his act.
Relatable and Comforting Stories
One of the biggest parts of the first two episodes were the real-life relationship problems sent to Deborah’s radio show, seeking advice. The stories range from outright crazy to some really relatable ones which we can even witness around us. And being the dating coach, Deborah definitely hits the spot by giving the best answers that can help anyone in similar situations.
The backstory of Soo-hyuk and his girlfriend Yu-ri’s story definitely felt quite realistic with the portrayal of a non-commital boyfriend. But how she calmly ends her relationship is very satisfying to watch. On a side note, also taking notes on keeping calm in such an awful situation.
Melodious Soundtracks
One of the best parts about K-Drama is the original soundtracks that just mesmerize you. So far only one song track has been released from the drama, which is titled A special day by singer Wisue. It is a mellow track that expresses the feeling of being in love & not wanting to lose the person. Another song by IKON’s Junhoe was also played in some scenes, titled By Chance, Love. It’s not officially released yet but a fan was able to record the part which you can hear here. It sounds like a sweet love song which definitely suits Junhoe’s voice.
