Too Hot To Handle Season 4 Episode 1-5 Review: Frivolous Stereotypes Stay On Top

Premiering on December 7, 2022, Netflix’s Too Hot To Handle Season 4 left us hanging with only the first five episodes, to even out the spicy factor and keep us waiting for more. Filmed in the Turks and Caicos Islands, our purple lit cone Lana pushes for the agenda of celibacy while attempting to foreground the gorgeous contestants’ relationships, but of course, their urge to flout the rules hits earlier that thought, as always.

Contesting for a prize money, the participants need to stay strong as every broken rule comes with a heavy price slashes off the lump some. The initially introduced ten cast members include Brittan Byrd, Creed McKinnon, Dominique Defoe, James Pendergrass, Jawahir Khalifa, Kayla Richart, Nick Kici, Nigel Jones, Sophie Stonehouse and Sebastian Melrose, with two surprise additions making their way in later. Desiree Lea Burch is our favourite narrator, with TV legend Mario Lopez making a special appearance as well.

Netflix describes the reality show as follows:

On the shores of paradise, gorgeous singles meet and mingle. But there’s a twist. To win an enticing grand prize, they’ll have to give up sex.

It’s funny how in each episode, the infamous cone police, Lana, lights up with its “you’re here to form deeper emotional connections”, when we all know what’s happening. And since somehow, we’v been dragged down the same path of shallow interactions being pushed to be magically transformed into deep connections, let’s get on with what this season’s first half had in store for us.

The show puts on a severely stereotypical heteronormative front with how reductive some of these couples discern sex. It’s all fun and games until that’s the only thing they have to offer us. Lana introduces numerous tests and challenges on the way to raise the stakes and give the contestants a hard time, some more than others. Despite the usual second-hand embarrassment met on the way, the fourth ride, which promised to be an “upgrade” on all terms in the first episode, takes on some surprise turns that add to the drama.

However, the majority stands out with its caricature-ish disposition that leaves nothing to the imagination about their personalities. Their personal round of introductions already tries preparing us beforehand about what we’ll be witnessing in the upcoming episodes, which is appropriately attested by Kayla’s outright and desperate wish, “I hope my parents don’t watch this”.

Despite all the noise, the series once again checks off as a superior guilty pleasure which leaves you questioning yourself on so many accounts as to why you clicked on the play button. Yet you can’t stop yourself from heading into the next episode, and that’s the ultimate questionable allure of such reality shows, once again kept alive by the first few episodes of Too Hot To Handle Season 4, which in spite of being of being ‘too much to handle’ blocks off the viewer’s thoughts of actual reality for the while, keeping you intrigued about how many more shades of foolishness and superficial proclamations are waiting to unfold.

Summing Up: Too Hot To Handle Season 4 Episode 1-5

Desiree’s narration lifts up the comic timing of all the unintelligible and trifling trivialities and makes you scoff along with her. The punching bag workshop attempted to gravitate towards the more emotional side and peeked into some contestants’ insecurities, which shifted the gears to some extent and tried to make things impactful.

Regardless, of how one-dimensional some of these contestants have been painted as in the show – as players with hollow promises to make, or being wholly focussed on one goal, i.e. saving the money bag while leaving no room for their relationship to grow (hinting at you ‘Officer Kill Joy’, even though he might be the only relatable person in there, keeping it real with the money) – I still adored Nick and Jawahir’s bond throughout the initial part of the season.

While many contestants continued narrowing down their potential partners as if they’re targets or conquests, again reducing the sensitive acceptance of what love should be like, their interactions have felt quite wholesome despite the bar being set too low. Lastly, what is up with the portrayal of sex?

Too Hot To Handle Season 4 episodes 1-5 are now streaming on Netflix. The remaining five episodes will be made available on the platform on December 14, 2022, possibly leading us to the elimination round and even more new additions to spice things up.
