Time Cut Review

The movie begins from the point of view of a neglected child- Lucy, with brilliant academic achievements but is invisible. However, her existence is foreshadowed by her dead elder sister for whom her parents still grieve. On her sister’s 20th death anniversary, the family goes to the place where she was murdered. But there she comes across a time machine in a shed that takes her 20 years into the past before the murders take place.

This horror thriller sci-fi film takes you on a teen’s journey to save her sister and her friends from an infamous serial killer who terrorised the town for years. What begins as a somewhat interesting concept with the right amount of thrills soon turns into a silly rom-com that leaves you hitting your head repeatedly. The film is a teen movie that brings in sci-fi elements of time travel and time paradox without really having looked into the concepts or the seriousness of the two.

While I will not deny the suspense on the killer’s identity and his murder scenes were good, it doesn’t hide the ending, destroys anything good you could find in the film. The “pink filtered” sisterhood Lucy shares with Summer (the elder sister) also doesn’t hide the fact that she has had a traumatising childhood all along. Having been neglected and forced to think about a sister she never met for years isn’t something easy to overcome. However, a high sense of morality (that is also thrown at her face a few times) smoothens out their relationship pretty fast. I guess that’s where the silly rom-com elements come in.

Meanwhile, the whole reason behind the serial killing is even more stupid. Instead of being heartbroken, the guy is just psychotic and needs help ASAP! Just because he was a nice guy in the past doesn’t mean that he will not go crazy over the silliest reason in the future. This film would’ve probably done better if labelled under different genres, but this is not the place it was supposed to be.

If there’s any element of the film that was remotely nice, it has to be the cinematography and the subtle thrill we get from the murder scenes. Beyond that, there is really nothing much left to say about this film other than this is something that you can easily look over and not regret in the future.

Summing Up

Overall, don’t be misled by the sci-fi and horror tags on this film because that will just make you want to curse later on. If you looking for something to kill time or want something to troll about with your friends, this is the film for you. This film will only make sci-fi lovers cry and horror lovers sleep but can be slightly entertaining for teen and rom-com movie lovers.
