They Cloned Tyrone Ending Explained: They Cloned Tyrone is a sci-fi comedy movie directed by Juel Taylor and written by Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier. The movie stars John Boyega, Teyonah Parris and Jamie Foxx in lead roles and has a runtime of 122 minutes.

They Cloned Tyrone Plot

This sci-fi comedy follows three friends who realise that something nefarious is going on in their neighbourhood when one of them wakes up in his bed after being shot the night before. In their hunt to find the truth, they discover that government organisations are experimenting on the local Black population, and instead of falling into a pit of despair after learning about his own truth, he and his friends decide to stand up for themselves and their neighbourhood.

They Cloned Tyrone Review

They Cloned Tyrone ending explained

This is a different kind of “buddy” film that really stretches the word buddy and takes us on an insanely engaging adventure. Although most of the first half is serious, with racism being an undercurrent throughout its runtime, the comedy kicks in as soon as the sci-fi part does and eventually, it ends up being a funny adventure film that gets its mystery right. Cloning is a very common tactic to keep audiences hooked, and since the results can be quite frightening, it’s always intriguing to watch in films.

The movie, however, works because of its protagonists and John Boyega and Teyonah Parris, especially, do a fantastic job. It’s entertaining, fast-paced and sensible enough never to lose you at any point of the runtime. This one’s definitely worth the watch if you’re in the mood for some reckless, head-scratching fun!

They Cloned Tyrone Ending Explained: So… What Was Happening?

They Cloned Tyrone starts with ruthless drug dealer Fontaine trying to get his money back from those around him. He gets into a scuffle with his nemesis Isaac and then gets shot promptly, which is witnessed by others, including pimp Slick Charles and prostitute Yo-Yo. However, when he wakes up fine and dandy the next morning, Slick Charles and Yo-Yo are shocked to find him alive. Through some keen observation and experimenting, he finds a secret layer under an old decrepit house which the three of them raid to find some sort of weird experiment happening.

Confused and scared (and now having murdered a man), the three of them run out, and the next morning Fontaine is shocked to go back to the house to find nothing there. However, the three of them refuse to forget the encounter and are absolutely sure that, considering the scope of the experiment, it can’t be a one-off situation. They try to find the next area of business and, thanks to a homeless man, find their way under a church, where they are able to find another lair.

Inside, Fontaine finds his own clones and is left baffled and confused even further. When they come out of the lair, he refuses to engage in it further, which Yo-Yo is unable to comprehend. However, he finally comes out of his own head and realises that he needs to do something about this. After some discussion with Yo-Yo and Slick Charles they realise that they are using the fried chicken, hair products and music to control people’s minds.

They Cloned Tyrone ending explained

In the end, with Isaac’s help, the three of them raid the lair and find the ultimate truth – the person behind all of his is the original Fontaine. He wanted to create a world where people could live in peace, and the only thing diving them is appearance – the colour of people’s skins. Thus, he experimented with them in order to turn them white, so that one day, several generations later, no one would look different. A part of their experiment was the Afro-haired white guys that we kept seeing.

Either way, Fontaine murders Original Fontaine, and Slick and Yo-yo are able to kill Nixon.

In the end, media cover the entire incident making this impossible to cover up. Elsewhere, another clone of Fontaine lives the same but just a little different life than Fontaine and in the last scene, he is left baffled while watching the TV, seeing himself on the screen.

Why did Original Fontaine do the experiment?

After losing his brother to a hate crime, Original Fontaine was left heartbroken and miserable, and he delved into this experiment to unite everyone so that no one goes through the pain that he did. He mentions at one point that assimilation is better than assassination, meaning that maybe he also understands that experimenting on his own race is probably a pretty bad thing, but he would risk that just so that other Black people aren’t unnecessarily murdered. His experiment will take place over several generations, and the effects won’t be seen overnight but this gradual change over generations will eventually lead to them not losing another loved one.

What’s up with Fontaine’s mother’s recorded message?

The recorded message of the mother is another mind-controlling method of the experiment so that Fontaine is kept in check. By keeping his mother “alive”, things remain “normal” for him. It’s the same thing that we see happening to the other “Fontaine” in the end.

Who is the “Other Fontaine”? Who is Tyrone?

He’s another part of the experiment and a clone of Fontaine living in another city. His life mirrors Fontaine’s, right down to the recorded mother, who doesn’t come out of the room. He is at first oblivious to the truth, but when he sees the news on the TV, he is left baffled and is pulled into the conspiracy. The title and the last scene probably showcase how he probably will also go down a similar path as his other clone.

What happens to Yo-yo, Slick Charles and Fontaine?

Yo-yo decides to give up on prostitution and move to Memphis as she had originally planned. Fontaine, calling himself only 3 days old, also decides to go with her and explore the world, and Slick decides to join them as well.

They Cloned Tyrone is streaming on Netflix.
