The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep Review

The plot of the film follows mutant monster hunter Geralt, who has been hired to probe the seaside village attacks. However, what he unravels is an age-old conflict between humans and merpeople that threatens a war between the land and sea. Now, he must solve the mystery behind these incidents before a war breaks out.

From the perspective of a viewer who is not a fan or has seen anything related to The Witcher universe, the film is simple, lightly entertaining and something that can be watched for temporary entertainment. With a plot that matches those of a fairytale that has been turned, the film is intriguing for a while until everything falls in front of its complex characters who have a deeper backstory that we have no idea about. As the characters’ depth falls in the face of the swift action that they have been put to conduct, the film can almost be a miserable watch for a fan of this universe.

The film is nothing more than a passing chapter of Geralt’s adventure and while we can take it in this way, I still find myself disappointed to quite an extent because of the essence the plot is missing. The characters really have no time to show their depth- the love story is somehow already settled and all we know is that two people from the opposing side are madly in love. They’re the Romeo and Juliet of the plot that we just have to accept are meant to be regardless of what happens in the world. How they got over their many barriers is unknown which is quite annoying.

Then there is the main character Geralt who as stated by Jaskier is the “brawl”, and truly nothing more than that if it weren’t for his flashbacks which give us a hint of his complicated relationship with Yennefer. We know that he is the main character here, but that is all there is pointing towards this fact. Even Jaskier has a better plot than him in this film as we see him as more than a musician and friend by his side.

So while the film definitely intrigues me to find out everything about The Witcher universe, because of how little I am able to get from here, it doesn’t do justice to the characters who have been brought together in this film.

Summing Up

The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep is not a film fans of this fandom are going to like much of how little it touches into the real characters of this universe. It is good as a fleeting watch and nothing more, simply because of how little we know about the characters who are brought together in the film. There is so little about every character in the film that I am just downright disappointed.
