The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Review: Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal Entertain You

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, an action-comedy film, stars Nicolas Cage as Nicolas/Nick Cage, Pedro Pascal as Javi Gutierrez, Sharon Horgan as Cage’s wife Olivia Henson, Tiffany Haddish as CIA Agent Vivian, Lily Sheen as Nick’s daughter Addy Cage, Paco Leon as Lucas Gutierrez, and Alessandra Mastronardi as Gabriela. Directed by Tom Gormincan, he penned the story along with Kevin Etten. The music is by Mark Isham, and the cinematography is by Nigel Bluck. The runtime is 107 minutes.

The IMDb synopsis reads, “A cash-strapped Nicolas Cage agrees to make a paid appearance at a billionaire super fan’s birthday party, but is really an informant for the CIA since the billionaire fan is a drug kingpin and gets cast in a Tarantino movie.”

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Review Contains No Spoilers

In Tom Gormincan’s The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Nick Cage is a popular actor who has won people’s hearts thanks to his amazing performances. However, he’s struggling to decide what his next movie will be as he doesn’t feel creatively satisfied. Even the money game isn’t going well for him. Cage can’t talk about anything but his movies to his ex-wife Olivia and daughter Addy.

Cage gets invited to a lavish birthday party by his superfan Javi Gutierrez for a hefty amount. However, just like his fictional characters, the CIA agents assign him a task to bring down a big criminal. Reel life situation meets real life, and Nick has to fulfil the operation without getting caught and helping the CIA to get hold of the criminal. Will he do it in style as he does in movies? That’s something you need to watch.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent trailer itself was enough to hint that the film will be a humorous take on what it feels to be a beloved celebrity. When you see Nicolas Cage play Nick Cage on screen, you know you are in for amusement. The film opens on a suspenseful note, and the moment the story brings Pedro and Nick together, it’s a laughter riot.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Still 1

Every time Pedro and Nick’s characters interact, they can’t help but admire each other. There’s great chemistry between the two that makes them hilarious and pleasant. Nick has to be Nick Cage and hide his CIA informant identity as he doesn’t want to get caught. We know Javi only as a die-hard Nick Cage fan, and he rightly represents what obsessive fans are like!

Javi and Nick talk about movies a lot. But their discussions are never like the ‘cinema experts’ where the conversations are about metaphors, layered characters and nuances. They go every bit dramatic and cheesy as they can. The story has every typical cinematic cliché we see in stories featuring two men and their bond. The entire middle act focuses on their camaraderie and cinematic adventure together, which will leave you in splits.

It’s time for the third act not only in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent but also for Javi and Nick. There are revelations, twists, ample drama, and, of course, action scenes. Even though you see the twist coming, you stay till the end. Sometimes, you just want to enjoy a film that makes you laugh with good jokes and phenomenal performances. Tom’s film is one of them.

Nicolas Cage as Nick Cage reminds one of BoJack Horseman at times. But, the film doesn’t take a dark and depressing turn. Cage has played the self-obsessed, lost and erratic version of himself with honesty and excitement. But it’s Pedro Pascal as Javi who won me over. Pedro is such a remarkable actor, and it was a splendid experience to see him in such a silly, non-serious and comedy role. The rest of the cast plays their part well.

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Still 2

The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the film intends to entertain without making you think a lot, and it delivers. You laugh; there’s drama, twists and enough action scenes. Fictional Nick Cage might struggle to find a decent script. But in reality, Nicolas has given a film that is enjoyable.
