The Tailor Review: Despite the Heavy Plot, it Lacks Depth

The Tailor Review: The Turkish drama series (Terzi) premiered on May 2, 2023, on Netflix. The series stars Çagatay Ulusoy in the lead role alongside Sifanur Gül, Olgun Simsek, Salih Bademci and more. Created by Cem Karci, the story is written by Gülseren Budayicioglu and the screenplay is given by Rana Mamatlioglu and Bekir Baran Sitki.

The story follows a gifted designer and tailor who gets entangled in a family drama as secrets try to pour out while he is still trying to escape his own demons.

From family drama to a complicated friendship, the story contains elements that add weight to the series. As the plot progresses, the story becomes more complex, and the twists make it more exciting as it moves forward. The characters are equally complicated than what they seem on the surface. However, the narrative lacked the emotional and intellectual depth that the audience crave in a truly compelling work of fiction.

The show starts off by introducing the main characters and showcasing a glimpse of their relationship dynamic. Peyami is a genius in his field, and everyone around him respects him. However, he is completely different in his personal life, as his past still haunts him. Outwardly, he is a confident man, unafraid to speak his mind. But mentally, he is a disturbed individual who hides away from his reality. He constantly tries to put on a facade for the people, which clearly shows how much people’s validation matters to him.

On the other hand, Dimitri is quite the opposite character. Even though he is intelligent, he lacks professionalism and does not have good behaviour. He lacks empathy for others and high key comes off as a sociopath with little to no regard for the people around him. His obsessive nature gets the best of him which turns into desperation and hurts the ones he cares for. With such contrasting characteristics, both Dimitri and Peyami maintained their friendship for years.

It is worth mentioning that the plot of the show is intriguing. It is undeniably intricate and densely packed with events that one will not see coming. It also manages to execute the storyline properly and give it enough build-up for an ultimate revelation. The series’ complex and intricately woven story is packed with a vast array of unexpected twists and turns. However, it struggles to explore the underlying themes that drive the plot forward fully.

Moreover, the story falls short when it comes to developing its characters in a meaningful way resulting in a show that has a heavy plot but lacks the depth necessary to captivate its audience truly. Despite its apparent potential, the show lacks meaningful exploration and character development, which ultimately detracts from its overall appeal. Moreover, some heavy subjects included in the series were handled poorly and came off as shallow, as it is hardly glossed over or even addressed throughout the runtime.

Additionally, the actors’ performances lacked the range of emotions and nuance to add depth and complexity to their characters. However, they did an adequate job, but it failed to connect to the audience emotionally, which would have ultimately elevated the plot. Nevertheless, Olgun Simsek was the shining star of the show. He stayed true to his character throughout.

The Tailor Review: Final Thoughts

While the show’s storyline is undoubtedly interesting and filled with exciting instances, it ultimately falls short in terms of character development and thought-provoking dive into the themes it includes, resulting in lacking the depth necessary to keep the audience hooked. Nonetheless, it can be an enjoyable experience for people who prefer mysterious plots which do not drag out the story for too long.

  1. An excellent and very edgy story. The characters stand on their own, and shallowness, confusion, cowardice and dishonesty are integral parts of their character. But the characters also stand for all the false elements of society : self-delusion, role-playing, false values, and the cruelty that all societies project, and the vaunted Western societies no less so. It is in a sense, a satire. We are all Mustafas, but have learned to hide our childishness under a facade of authority and confidence, and often fool even ourselves, along with our audience. Something like great apes who after losing in a physical confrontation with other apes, alter their visages in the process of running through shrubs: they enter crestfallen and depressed and exit with a look of confidence and success. It’s all about appearances but Mustafa is not up to the challenge: he is the hidden truth.

  2. I should mention the very specific gender issues addressed: None of the men in this film look good as specimens of human beings. The title incorporates the fact that Peyami, the central character is in the fashion industry, or the “making over” of women. He is ruthless in this pursuit, and the industry itself is known for its misogynist orientation. But, ironically he cannot remake himself. Mustafa stands for all men and their lack of maturity, a facet of their privileged position in society. But it is only idiots like Mustafa that cannot be challenged and opposed. So babying men, a historical fact, has not been complementary, or productive in the formation of their character. Dimitri is a sadistic, pathological figure. He represents the pronounced misogynist element in almost all societies, ancient and modern. How do we like it? Fifty years ago the idea of marital rape was laughed at by the Canadian Parliamentary opposition. It is still a novel idea in many areas of the world, including the West.

  3. Anyone who gives this very brilliant series less than a 10 is too much caught up with the total woke community that the USA now deals with
everywhere, especially in the movie and media industry. Currently its sadly now anything goes. So when an incredible series lik this comes along, they all concider it boring and lacking excitement.
The acting and writing is exceptional and could teach the current crop
of hollywood insiders a lesson or two. The average movie out today in the USA is either violent, gorry, sappy, corny or a movie that has a PG13 rating that should be an R rating due to all the nudity lauguage and violence.
Hopefully Netflix will continue to bring more incredible series like this from all over the world
