The Night Agent Review
The problem with many crime thrillers shows is that they follow a predictable pattern, using the same tried and tested methods of the genre. Notably, this lack of a non-conventional approach can make the story feel repetitive and unoriginal, leaving little room for surprises or unexpected twists. However, The Night Agent makes an exception in this category and breaks free from the traditional methods of espionage.
The plot of the show revolves around Peter Sutherland (played by Gabriel Basso), a determined FBI employee with an unusual night routine, with little to no exposure to live action. Moreover, his job mostly revolves around dogwatch hours, while waiting for an emergency call.

Notably, the spark of momentum in the show arrives when the emergency line rings unexpectedly, and leads him into an assassination probe, which creates tumult in his personal and professional life. The call leads him into a rogue agent scenario, where he must confront the moles present within and outside his organization.
What happens next is a strong dose of engaging action, espionage thriller and some offbeat investigation tactics, which come together to create a unique blend of this political spy saga.
The series is well-crafted and expertly plotted, with twists and turns that keep you hooked to the narrative. The characters are engaging and well-drawn, particularly Peter Sutherland, who appears as a relatable protagonist. Furthermore, as he delves deeper into the conspiracy, he is forced to make difficult moral choices throughout the trajectory of the show.

Notably, one of the strengths of the show is its realistic portrayal of the inner workings of the government. The makers are successful in reflecting the intricate political and secretive efforts that govern the actions of those in power.
Even though the story breaks away from the area of intrigue (after episode 5), it does a great job bringing the loose ends together and connecting all the dots towards the end. Sutherland’s usual escape in the nick of time doesn’t feel stretched or overdone, rather allows us to intake the events gradually.

Basso delivers a clinching performance in the role of the gritty FBI agent and keeps the storyline intact with his convincing nuances. Moreover, it’s a delight to see Hong Chau in the series (playing the chief of staff), who never missed her mark even for a moment.
Final Thoughts

All in all, if you are a hardcore fan of slick political thrillers, and have been waiting for a worthy binge since The Bodyguard, then Shawn Ryan’s adaptation might just surprise you with its slick treatment. Plus, the climax will definitely leave you wanting more of the unfiltered espionage action.
