The Mosquito Coast season 2 is right around the corner hence, a recap of season 1 is much needed. The American drama is based on a novel of the same name by Paul Theroux. The series stars Justin Theroux, the nephew of Paul, along with Melissa George, Logan Polish and Gabriel Bateman as the main cast.
The television series developed by Neil Cross and Tom Bissel premiered on April 30, 2021. It consists of 7 episodes in total, with a runtime of approximately 50 minutes respectively.

–The Mosquito Coast Recap/Review Contains Spoilers–
The series starts with Allie Fox, who stays off the grid in America along with his wife and two teenage children whom they homeschool. Allie works as a handyman in the nearby factory and also sells off his inventions for a decent profit while. At the beginning of the series, it can be seen that the family stays away from any electronic media available. His children, Dina and Charlie, often used to indulge themselves in some form of entertainment through a secret cell phone and radio. After his wife, Margot, makes a phone call to her parents through a payphone, their lives start to spiral out of control as the cops try to capture them.
As they are about to flee the country, Dani, however, decides to run away from the family in search of her own destination, but soon Allie manages to find her, and after much difficulty that involves injuring two cops, they are finally reunited with the entire family. They meet up with Juan and Chuy, who agrees to smuggle the family across the border safely. But due to unforeseen circumstances, they lose Juan to a shootout between three militia members.
They finally reach Mexico along with Chuy and are welcomed at an estate by a man named Enrique. Things soon go south when Aunt Lucrecia decides to trade the family to free someone of importance to her in America. But soon, they manage to flee from the estate as well with the help of Chuy and set out to find another destination.
In the rest of the episodes, Allie and his family can be seen getting into various problems here and there, but they somehow manage to meet up with Calaca, who helps them reach the sanctuary. As planned, in the final episode, Allie is shown travelling in a boat that he intended to buy to a new location and start off fresh with his family.

Thoughts: It is a mess
The Mosquito Coast Season 1 looked promising but soon started to go downhill soon after the third episode. As the viewers slowly start to indulge in the story and enjoy it, the plot becomes a mess. The attempt to try to show that a family is trying to rise above modern society, to reject its values and live on their own, becomes rather comical than revolutionary. The plot was unable to put across the important message or the story simply lacked the substance that it requires for it to hold any value at all. The story was hollow and seemed superficial and performative.
The locations were the only positive thing that I could find in the entire series. The cast also did an underwhelming job, they were not compelling enough for the audience to get captivated by it. The dialogue and their delivery also failed to impress.
