The Map That Leads to You Review

Watching romantic comedies these days makes me feel like one or both of the protagonists have lived under a rock and, after having a chance encounter, is somehow learning about normal human conversations and connections. The relationship between “good girl” Heather and “circus boy” Jack starts off with the most inauthentic, annoying and clichéd ways possible, with Jack somehow sleeping on the train’s luggage area. Because he’s mysterious and quirky and doesn’t care for normal human behaviour.

We then get scene after scene of them doing the most obvious stuff that romcoms like to shove down our throats, including them going on a closed-off cable car ride. This movie feels like a fever dream and then some, mostly because nothing feels genuine, and it doesn’t feel like the dreamy and adventurous vacation that the movie wants us to feel.

The first half of the film focuses on the group in Europe, getting into problems and living their lives as Heather and Jack get to know one another. I don’t believe it because I don’t believe the conversations that they have – they feel made up as they talk about intellectual stuff outside of bars. No one speaks to each other like that, and the conversations between the friends don’t feel relatable either. They just say random things to appear cool and deep, but there’s not much depth if you look hard enough.

The second half deals with one of the protagonists facing an impossible situation, and the relationship that starts with nothing immediately starts to burn the moment the hard questions are asked. As a romcom, I neither felt the romance nor the comedy. It feels condescending and complicated only for being complicated. There is neither real depth nor youthfulness in the story. It’s trying to be intellectual, but only turns out to be thoroughly fake.

In the end, the generic ending doesn’t help, and neither does the lack of chemistry between KJ Apa and Madelyn Cline. Heather coming to terms with herself and her relationship with Jack and getting advice from her father, trying to find Jack, and the sudden happy ending are just so boring and generic that it’s been done to death. There is no warmth because the characters and their interactions don’t feel warm. That’s made worse because the performances are just so mid; there is no spark here that makes our hearts flutter.

Final thoughts

The Map That Leads to You Review: KJ Apa, Madelyn Cline

The Map That Leads to You doesn’t have anything warmth or a genuine connection. The characters, their motivations and their entire lives feel like they have been written for a movie and not real people we are meant to love and follow. Both Jack and Heather feel like caricatures, and the story is so overdone that, in 2025, it doesn’t have anything that differentiates it from others.
