Starring Mohit Raina, Anupam Kher, Kashmira Pardeshi, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Navneet Malik, Manjari Fadnnis, Sushant Singh, John Kokken, Gauri Balaji, Sarah Jane Dias and Navneet Malik alongside others, this Neeraj Pandey extraction-thriller series has 7 episodes and was released in two parts. The series, based on the 2017 book A Ticket to Syria by Shirish Thorat, is produced by Friday Storytellers and directed by Bhav Dhulia. Each episode of the series ranges from 40-60 minutes.
The Freelancer: The Conclusion was released on December 15, 2023, and has 3 episodes which discuss what happens to Aliya and whether or not Avinash is able to get her out of Syria successfully.
The series follows a young woman, Aliya, who unknowingly gets into a marriage scam and is taken away to join an extremist organisation by her new husband’s family. Racing against time, Avinash Kamath, her father’s close friend and a mercenary, makes it his mission to get her out by any means necessary before she finds herself in a horrifying fate.
Why did Mohsin forcefully take Aliya away?
Mohsin and his family, although previously open-minded and cordial, were turned extremist by Farhat Khala, a member of the extremist organisation in Syria. She brainwashed the women and eventually worked her way through to the men and convinced them that if they were not working to move Islam’s words forward, then they were not doing the right thing and working against their religion. In reality, they are simply a terrorist organisation whose warped beliefs have removed them from society. Mohsin and his family were their victims, which, in turn, made Aliya a victim as well.
Who is Arif Ajmaal Khan?
Anupam Kher’s character is someone who is also a spy-like character who works in a shadowy organisation. Although we do not get to know too much about him, he’s Avinash’s mentor and helped the grieving father out when he was in a downward spiral. Interestingly, Avinash had met him on an assignment to kill Arif, but the latter eventually recruited and guided him to work under him.
Why did Inayat Khan die?
Mohsin and the leader of the terrorist organisation had instructed Inayat to end his own life in order to keep Aliya safe. It was a tactic to make the world privy to the organisation’s plans, and it is revealed that they took responsibility for it, showcasing Inayat as one of their people, but in reality, it was pure blackmail.
How did Avinash plan to get Aliya out?
Avinash took the help of the CIA to get Aliya out. Although they were only interested in getting her brother-in-law out safe because he is a pilot, Avinash took it upon himself to carry out this mission without them. However, he did ask them to wait to drop the bomb on the house since Aliya had proven to be a good asset and, by then, had sent tons of information on the operation of ISIS in Syria and her family’s whereabouts.
Why did Avinash have to go back to Aliya’s house after presumably rescuing her?
Avinash realises that the girl that he rescued is not Aliya when they get into an altercation at a security checkpoint, and she gets shot. He takes off her veil to find the British girl instead of Aliya and then goes back and gets Aliya out just before the bomb drops. The British girl and Aliya had gotten into an altercation just before the extraction after the latter tried to drug her in order to get her out of the way, and she got to know about it. Avinash later finds Alia tied up in her house, and they get out of there quickly.
Was Avinash able to get Aliya out?
After rescuing her the second time, Avinash gets Aliya out quite easily. Although Mohsin gets home and refuses to let her leave, Avinash doesn’t waste time and promptly shoots him before making his way out of the place. The two of them get away on a boat, and Aliya talks to her mother for the last time before going into hiding – the official story is that she got killed in the bomb blast.
What did the ending signify?
In the end, it is showing that a neighbour had taken a video of Avinash taking Aliya out of the house before the air strikes. It signifies that the story is not over and that ISIS will try to hunt Avinash down for ruining their plans, probably in The Freelancer Season 2.
