The Elusive Samurai Episode 1 Recap

The anime begins with the story of Tokiyuki, the elusive heir to the Kamakura Shogunate. Tokiyuki is quick on his feet and reluctant to attend to his duties or studies, which should make him a good ruler. However, not much is expected of him as it’s assumed he’ll grow up to be a puppet monarch like his father. Fortunately, his vassal and famed hero, Takauji Ashikaga, is there to protect him from enemies. Things take a turn for the worse when Takauji leaves to quell an uprising and comes back to set up a coup.

Tokiyuki also encounters Yorishige, a strange and eccentric Shinto priest who insists he’s not a fake. He also claims that Tokiyuki, who according to many, is useless, will become a great hero at the age of 10. He is also the one who saves Tokiyuki and promises to restore him to his position.

The episode’s most striking feature is its shock factor, as it delivers a sudden and unexpected ruthless twist. One moment, the protagonist is enjoying his life, and the next, his world is turned upside down with everyone that he knows dead or on the run. The episode leaves us wondering if Tokiyuki’s ability to escape is truly great enough to help him survive the harsh world he’s been thrust into.

In the next episode, we will most likely see Tokiyuki travelling to the estate of Yorkshire. Here, the young prince will train and he will be provided with companions who will help him win his fight. We might also see Takauji taking absolute control over the kingdom.
