The Diplomat Trailer: Keri Russell Takes On a Herculean Task By Being an Ambassador

Netflix is releasing another series following some tense political action, and The Diplomat trailer totally emulates that energy. This is an eight-episode series starring Keri Russell, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, Ato Essandoh, Celia Imrie, Michael McKean, Nana Mensah, T’Nia Miller and Miguel Sandoval, alongside other cast members. The show was created by Debora Cahn, a writer and producer for shows like Homeland and Grey’s Anatomy.

The trailer shows Ambassador Katherine Wyler meet British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge, in the beginning. This already sets the tone that she is someone important within this larger group of people who are part of the cabinet. As they sit down to discuss, Wyler explains how someone has been trying to lure a strike team to the Persian Gulf. Instead of focusing on other war-torn countries, they should rather focus on the oligarchal countries with immeasurable power in these regions.

Visuals from the trailer show a ship blowing up somewhere in the ocean. Considering the voice-over was about the Persian Gulf, that may be where the tragedy occurred. The next shot shows military members at a state funeral putting many people’s memorials together. There weren’t supposed to be so many casualties in the first place. The only reason Wyler went there was to make sure that there wouldn’t be any deaths.

Amidst all of this, Wyler’s husband joins her in assistance, and he is not an easy man. The shot shows him sitting in a charter plane opposite Wyler, telling her that she should focus on keeping people alive and avoiding a war instead of buttering crumpets. Already we know what kind of dynamic they are going to be having as they travel and work together. Calling himself the Ambassador’s wife, he has already decided to establish some heteronormative power dynamic in this system.

We later find out that her husband was actually an Ambassador before her and so this change is a little difficult for him. While she wants to do her job by keeping the facts in diplomacy in mind, her husband, Hal, tells her that being Cinderella will probably work best for her in this situation. She vehemently refuses, and her husband says one more time that she shouldn’t be doing it wrong.

Instead of attacking Iran, Wyler suggests that they look at Russia and Saudi Arabia because they may be the ones who have actually committed this heinous crime against so many people. While other people are in on this take, they are more surprised that Hal and Wyler are working together. They note that this intelligence tool is the most important thing in de-escalating this situation. Even though Wyler and Hal essentially hate each other, it doesn’t stop certain old tendencies from arising.

Meanwhile, there are other people too engaging in some fraternising behaviour. An undercurrent of collusion rings foul in the face of something this serious. Hal and Wyler grow closer through the course of their unlikely partnership and speak of their professional mistakes and setbacks that come from their partnership. Things are going incredibly wrong in the house, and the Ambassador seems to have no idea. This tips her off endlessly. People lose their lives by poisoning, while some cars blow up and power dynamics shift.

Wyler is supposed to run this place, but it feels like the power is slipping from her hands, and Hal being there, is not doing anything for their sanity. In fact, she even yells out loud that she feels psychotic in this place because Hal’s interference shifts people’s ideas of authority in the office. This show explores her coming to terms with this kind of responsibility while also dealing with her husband & ex-ambassador, trying to take the lead from her.
