The Crowded Room: All About Tom Holland’s Upcoming Psychological Thriller Series

One’s past maketh the present, and the Spider-Man actor, Tom Holland’s present is shifting gears from portraying him as the wholesome friendly neighbourhood superhero to positing him in a more darker reality in The Crowded Room releasing this June. “Sometimes I think that night marked me. Everything that came afterwards…couldn’t be a coincidence, could it?” That’s how the upcoming psychological thriller’s trailer begins on a foreboding note, and it sets the mood for what’s to come next.

Created by Akiva J Goldsman, the drama series is a lot more than what meets the eye at first. Goldsman, Suzanne Heathcote, Tom Holland, Alexandra Milchan and others have joined as the executive producers of the show, while Kornél Mundruczó, Mona Fastvold, Brady Corbet and Alan Taylor stepped in as the series directors. So, what secrets have been holding Danny back? Is he really guilty of all that’s been claimed of him? Guess we’re about to find out soon!

The Crowded Room Cast

The American period series stars Tom Holland in the leading role of Danny Sullivan, while his younger counterpart will be played by Zachary Golinger. Alongside, Holland, Amanda Seyfried is to play the curious interrogator Rya Goodwin, and Emmy Rossum will be seen as Candy Sullivan, Danny’s mother.

As part of the supporting cast, Will Chase takes on the role of Danny’s stepfather, Marlin Reid, and Sasha Lane will be portraying the titular character’s friend, Ariana. The ensemble cast also includes Christopher Abbott as Stan Camisa, Emma Laird as Isabel, Jason Isaacs as Jack Lamb and many others.

The Crowded Room Plot/Storyline

In most cases, when such storylines are pursued by production houses, the viewers’ minds instantly wander off to find out if the show is based on true events or not. The Crowded Room isn’t entirely a true-crime series, rather many have been calling it a “true-crime adjacent”. Based on the non fiction novel The Minds of Billy Milligan (1981) by Daniel Keyes, the show has largely borrowed its source text from the accounts of William Stanley ‘Billy’ Milligan’s criminal involvements in 1979.

The aforementioned book, too, centres around the said man and how he became the first person in US history to be acquitted of his severe crimes upon pleading Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID). While Milligan was brought in for rape, robbery and kidnapping in 1979, the series turns it around to some extent and will focus on Sullivan (Holland) being arrested for his role in the New York City shooting in 1979.

His life is further unravelled in his conversations with Rya Goodwin (Seyfried), who, on her first meeting with him (as also revealed in the trailer) points out that Danny “doesn’t really seem like a dangerous person”. The following interactions dig deep into how “he ended up here”. The same arrangement allows for Danny to retrospectively look back at his mysterious past, and how it ultimately altered his life for the worst to come.

Tom has even gone on to detail that the series seeks to give us an insight into the “power of the human mind” and how “we can deal with trauma”. (EW) Eventually, the narrative leans more towards how it all becomes about a “kid’s determination to survive” in the end.
