The moment The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin starts, you know this is going to be a silly and dramatic watch. And the Noel Fielding comedy series doesn’t disappoint. Following just insane stories of Dick Turpin who is trying really hard to get into his newfound role of a highwayman that just dropped on his lap one fine day, it makes you laugh at the absurdity that is taking place on-screen as Dick meanders his way through things that he has absolutely no idea about in order to find his footing in his new profession and get the respect of his gang members.
Noel Fielding’s Dick Turpin is delightful. At first, one might think that Turpin’s silliness would become unbearable after a few episodes but surprisingly enough, the creators are quite restrained with how far they go with Turpin’s stupidity because he’s not stupid. He’s goofy, sure; silly, even. But he’s smart and witty as well. He knows his strengths and weaknesses and doesn’t go overboard. Thus, you laugh with him, but never at him. He’s also quite charming and the fact that things happen to work in his favour is a bonus.
On top of him, there are his three other bandmates who are quite sweet and watchable. The four of them balance each other’s negatives quite well, especially from the audience’s perspective, they are funny, just a dash immature and a whole lot of fun. Actually, even the fiercest of people in the series are quite aware of where they stand with their nastiness. The antagonists are bad, but they are still funny. No one goes overboard because this isn’t that kind of a show – you are supposed to sit back and relax with this one and not take much seriously.
Every episode has a different storyline for Dick and his mates. As they try to gain respect from those around them, they come across different hurdles that they must overcome and every hurdle is one shockingly hilarious ordeal after another. I was left cackling at some of the stories and how the creators went about showcasing the highwaymen’s journey. The way the creators bring out their silly and entertaining antics, the dialogues and the acting all mesh together really well to leave us astounded. The stories are also a part of an overarching plot that ties with each other well. Plus, each of the subplots has something to teach – there’s depth in the stories, it’s not just goofy banter!
Noel Fielding, Ellie White, Marc Wootton and Duayne Boachie as the four highwaymen are delightful and endearing. They are funny and believable in their roles, especially Wootton who will really steal your heart. Fielding, as Dick Turpin, is delightful as well. The opening sequence is on point and I loved the song; so dramatic and perfect for the show through and through.
The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin Review: Conclusion
This cute show is a light, funny and unserious affair that one can simply not take seriously. The stories are entertaining, the characters are warm and the cinematography is excellent. For those who want something to watch with the family, this one should be right up your alley.
