The Catholic School Review: A Blood-Chilling Movie Based on True Events

The Catholic School (La Scuola Cattolica) is Netflix’s latest release based on the Circeo Massacre that took place in 1975 in Rome that became one of the most heinous news events in Italian history. Directed by Stefano Mordini, the movie stars Benedetta Porcaroli, Federica Torchetti, Giulio Pranno, Emanuele Maria Di Stefano, alongside other cast members.

The plot of the movie revolves around the events leading to the Circeo Massacre and a look into the lives of the privileged perpetrators who took part in such a heinous crime.

Netflix’s synopsis reads:

Students at a Catholic boys’ school in 1970s Rome struggle with religious repression and rigid gender roles until a few resort to unforgivable violence.

The movie starts off with a glimpse of the climax where one of the girls, Donatella is banging against the car trunk to call for help. The scene then changes to months before the incident as the narrator Edoardo speaks about the kind of life they lived before the incident.

The students of the all-boys Catholic school who have lived a privileged life didn’t have it easy in the school where you are either subdued or get subdued by others. While the bullies are able to easily get away thanks to their parents, life doesn’t get any better for the bullied or the ones who snitch.

The scenes of the events before the incident may get confusing at times due to the jump that keeps happening in the movie, however, it doesn’t fail to show the lives that these students have lived.

As the narrator talks about how the incident changed every person in their little neighbourhood that most of these boys belonged to, he also shows us the life of the students apart from the perpetrators. He also brought one of the students who later goes on to study psychology and concluded that most of their classmates had some disorder or the other.

While the focus of the movie is on the ending that shows the events of the Circeo Massacre, most of it shows the lives of these teenagers who are stepping into adulthood. The age which is filled with curiosity about worldly pleasures and a wish to dive into them.

Altogether, the climax of the movie shows the terrorising Circeo Massacre that involved students of this school and two girls from a nearby town; but this is not all that you will get. You get to take a look into their lives before the incident and also the lives of others who studied with them.

The social requirements and the easy but demanding lives of the privileged is one to not miss out on.
