The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2 Review: Hot And Steamy

Vanitas has lost his eponymous book and has gotten hurt in the process. The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2 picks us right from where we left off, so let’s get on with the review!

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2 Overview

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2 Title

The Case Study of Vanitas, or Vanitas no Carte in original Japanese, is a supernatural, historical, and vampire show based upon a manga written by Jun Mochizuki. It follows the human-vampire duo of Vanitas and Noe as they try to find out the perpetrator behind the recent impurity in the vampires’ hearts. This episode is also referred to as Vanitas no Carte Season 2 Episode 2, The Case Study of Vanitas Part 2 Episode 2, and Vanitas no Carte Part 2 Episode 2.

This season of Vanitas is being brought to the medium of anime by Studio Bones, a giant behind classic anime shows such as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood and My Hero Academia. The season is being directed by Tomoyuki Itamura, who also directed part 1 of the show, alongside several shows of the Monogatari series. Jeanne VAnitas

Like always, there is a no-spoiler assurance in this review. However, unlike most times, there is no need for that this time around, as the latest outing by The Case Study of Vanitas didn’t have enough content in it to spoil. A lot of time was spent in conversations about topics that either didn’t matter or didn’t hold much weight in the overall plot structure of the show. However, it was an entertaining watch all the same.

We ended the last episode with Vanitas getting gravely injured and losing his book to the strange intruders, alongside Noe getting kidnapped. That is still exactly where we are after the episode ended, indicating net-zero progress in an entire episode. We learnt some more about the past of Jeanne, but it wasn’t substantial enough to leave a notable impression and served as the faintest hint of the McGuffin of this season.

DAnte Vanitas The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2

The episode included some steamy moments between the pair of Jeanne and Vanitas in the first half. Their relationship has always been a weird one, but it is obvious that it hasn’t been one-sided for a long time. The time spent with the pair was sweet, but not much came out of it except an explanation of how Vanitas survived and Jeanne’s backstory. I hope the show does more with this couple and doesn’t give up on them after some time passes.

Then the night was all but forgotten as Vanitas confronted Dante for some odd reason not yet known to the audience. The show has had more than a few brushes with not being able to properly distinguish between its comedic and serious moments, and this episode was no different. There were some awkward transitions of that kind here, which might just be a permanent part of the show that we’ll just have to ignore the next 10 episodes.

The best thing that can be said about this episode was that it enhanced the long term storytelling of Vanitas’ past. The show has done an excellent job in building a tragic and intriguing backstory for its main character, and every episode feels as if it takes us ever too close to learning the truth about the entire series. For now, most people will just be satisfied knowing who the mystery kidnappers are and what they are planning to do to the world.

The animation and music of The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2 was on par with everything else the series has done so far. It does a great job in making the viewers want more of everything- the animation, the soundtrack, the characters, and the plot. The voice acting is also tremendous, even though I still miss the excellent dub of part 1 of the show. Oh well, who knows? If the season is good, people might just check out the dubbed version as well.

Verdict

The Case Study Of Vanitas Season 2 Episode 2 was a bit of a nothing episode where not much happened, and the plot didn’t quite progress, but it was still entertaining all the same.
