The Accidental Twins Story
What happens when you suddenly discover that you have a twin somewhere in the world? And, not just that – that your brother has a twin as well that they have no idea about! In a story as shocking as it is utterly befuddling, two pairs of twins William Canas Velasco & Jorge Enrique Bernal Castro and Carlos Bernal Castro & Wilber Canas Velasco find out by pure luck that the people they were calling fraternal brothers up until then, were all switched at birth.
The Accidental Twins Review
The New York Times did a fascinating article on this rather shocking situation “The Mixed-Up Brothers of Bogotá” and I think the title leaves you questioning and makes you interested to know more about a shocking, heartbreaking as well as heartwarming situation. The Accidental Twins leaves you shocked, which is an understatement, and the sheer randomness through which the two sets of twins learn the truth is nothing short of cosmic. My mouth was left hanging when I realized that there were not one but two sets of twins who had been switched! The fact that they were raised as fraternal twins is just the icing on this funny mess of a situation.
The story is told through the first-person accounts of the twins as well as those around them and there’s a beautiful mixture of the situation, how it came to be, and how the situation has affected the four men whose life suddenly turned upside down one fine day. The Netflix documentary does the twins justice by giving them a big chunk of the runtime to simply speak their minds and share the happiness and anguish that a situation such as this can bring. The documentary brings forth their stories in a very interesting way and it flows effortlessly.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the recreations but the video footage and pictures of the twins, their first meeting, and the interviews are done really well and pieced together at the right times to give a realistic boost to the entire thing. Of course, we also delve into the biggest question here – how did this even happen? The documentary talks to lawyers and doctors of the hospital in which the twins were taken and discusses the possibility of such an incident happening. Could it have happened to others? This is a question that one interviewee asks, but one that we might never get an answer to.
The Accidental Twins goes down heartwrenching territories when the twins share the difficulties of learning out of the blue that your parents aren’t your parents. It happens to only two out of the four and their testimonies are nothing short of sad and will make you sympathize with their situation thoroughly. Although there is an undertone of heartbreak throughout the runtime of the film, it’s during these sequences that the movie truly brings forth the devastation of having your life upended one fine day. Plus, with the hospital not willing to take any responsibility, we are left with no justice, just an indifferent shrug.
Final Thoughts

The Accidental Twin is an interesting film that makes you go through many different feelings with the twins. It highlights the heartbreak and confusion and the psychological toll that such a situation can have on a person and does so without adding too much drama to the mix. For those who want to watch something mind-blowing without the crime, this one will be thoroughly interesting!
