That’s Amor Review: Riley Dandy and Isaac Gonzalez Rossi Serve Up a Delicious Plate

That’s Amor is a romantic-comedy movie directed by Shaun Paul Piccinino and starring Riley Dandy, Isaac Gonzalez Rossi and Daniel Edward Mora, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 96 minutes.

Netflix describes the movie as:

After her job and relationship implode on the same day, Sofia starts from scratch — and meets a dashing Spanish chef who might be her missing ingredient.

That’s Amor starts as your typical rom-com – our down-on-luck protagonist gets the rug yanked from underneath her and then goes on a journey to find herself, much like every other rom-com, in one way or another.

Sofia’s general disdain for life, after multiple tragedies rock her stability, is honestly a bit relatable. But in general, she’s the protagonist who is absolutely supposed to be annoying and rather unbearable. Thankfully, we jump right into the cooking class without wallowing too much in self-pity. In all honesty, though, even after the main story progresses, Sofia is still annoying and constantly complains about everything even though, really, it’s not really anyone’s fault.

Sofia’s mom Lainie saves the day during those moments, she’s sweet, and wholesome, and you simply want to hug her. When Matias is introduced, he, too, is quite sweet with his warm smile and caring demeanour. Of course, That’s Amor is filled with tropes of the romantic-comedy genre and the usual looks that close ones give to two people who are destined to fall in love.

However, even with the usual tropes and silly and expected direction of the storyline, the movie is heartfelt and sincere and discusses the connection between love for people and food. The latter has the ability to bring people together and open up parts of their lives that they might not have known were there. It’s a sweet sentiment if you’re in a rut and want confirmation that there’s hope if you want to find it.

I found myself laughing along with our lovebirds as they slowly fall for each other through very elaborate discussions about work and travel and, of course, food. It’s nothing new, but the packaging is sweet after we get to know both of our protagonists better. Sofia needs a bit more time than Matias, whom you immediately will take a liking to. The other members of the cooking class are rather bland, however, and so is Richard, whose just your typical f-boy.

Talking about that, Richard is a character who simply doesn’t matter in this story, and he stays for the ride for longer than he is needed. But they make up for it with the mother-daughter relationship. Lainie and Sofia make the cutest “class couple” that we all love to watch. They bicker and fight like every other mother and daughter, but in the end, they are always there for each other when it counts.

Riley Dandy and Isaac Gonzalez Rossi are delightful in their respective roles. Dandy is very watchable as Sofia, whose general disdain towards life is rather funny, while Rossi is cute as a button. They have nice chemistry together, and you want to see their relationship be successful in spite of the very small hurdles that come barrelling towards them.

Summing Up: That’s Amor

that's amor

That’s Amor is your typical feel-good romantic drama film that’s the perfect watch for the weekday blues. It’s simple and sweet, and things get solved very swiftly, so you don’t have to sit there for several agonising minutes wondering when the movie ends. All in all, this is quite a fun and charming watch.

That’s Amor is streaming on Netflix.

  1. There wasn’t any actor from Spain a available???
There isn’t any from Spanish cuisine in this movie. The producers should have called José Andrés or any other well known cook to advise the “writers”.
One insult after another for Spain
