Thank You I’m Sorry Review: The Journey of Life Amidst Loss and Grief

Thank You I’m Sorry Review: Also known as Tack och förlåt, the film stars Sanna Sundqvist, Charlotta Björck, Amaël Blomgren Alcaide, Ia Langhammer, Juan Rodriguez, Peshang Rad, Ville Virtanen and others. Written by Marie Østerbye, the Swedish film on Netflix is directed by Aschan.

In the poignant narrative of Thank You I’m Sorry on Netflix, Sara, a pregnant woman in the final stages of her pregnancy, is confronted with the sudden loss of her husband, Daniel, who passes away in his sleep. Left to helm the complexities of grief, impending motherhood, and the responsibility of caring for their firstborn child, Sara finds an unexpected comfort in her estranged elder sister, Linda.

Grieving is a long process, an enduring journey marked by the unforgettable imprint of loss. In the wake of Daniel’s untimely death, Sara grapples with the challenge of informing both her family and his, ensuring the well-being of her firstborn, and safeguarding her delicate pregnancy as she approaches her due date.

Contrary to conventional tragic portrayals of such situations, Thank You I’m Sorry introduces a unique blend of satire and dark humour that makes its way through the narrative. Moments of grief are presented with a certain convoluted charm that evokes not only empathy but also an unexpected chuckle from the viewers. When Linda comes into the picture, the narrative often becomes bizarre.

As the story unfolds, the overarching theme of loss and mourning gradually morphs into an intense exploration of sisterhood. Both Sara and Linda harbour unspoken grievances and past disputes, gradually surfacing against the backdrop of a shared loss.

While Sara’s grief is the central premise, equal importance is given to her older sister, Linda. We are given a glimpse of Linda’s casual and quirky life. The bizarre equation she shares with her boyfriend/live-in partner and the weird quirks they have. The sisters are completely opposite, and that’s what makes the story so interesting to watch.

The chemistry between the sisters is portrayed authentically, mirroring the subtle dynamics of sibling relationships—alternating between startling revelations and moments of shared laughter. Sanna Sundqvist and Charlotta Björck deliver impeccable performances, breathing life into the characters of Sara and Linda.

The movie also delves into Sara’s interactions with Daniel’s parents after his demise. It explores the intricacies of relationships built around a central figure who is no longer alive. Awkwardness, friction, and resentment come to the forefront, creating a precise depiction of the aftermath of loss. However, towards the end, we see things falling into place.

Thank You I’m Sorry Review: Final Thoughts

Thank You I’m Sorry may initially appear as a sombre exploration of death and grief. Yet, the film’s clever integration of twisted and black comedic elements serves to lighten the tension in crucial moments. It is a tale of forgiveness and the strength of the sibling bond in the face of adversity. The movie may not resonate with everyone, but for those intrigued by the exploration of human relationships amid personal crises, it proves to be a compelling watch.

The movie is now streaming on Netflix.
