Tetris Trailer: Behind the Game That Changed Politics and Incited Chaos

Apple TV+ has been churning out good content lately, and this new Tetris trailer is proving just that. Chronicling the story of Tetris and its entry into the world, this film stars Taron Egerton, Nikita Efremov, Sofya Lebedeva, Rick Yune, Toby Jones, Ben Miles, Roger Allam, Oleg Stefan, Ieva Andrejevaite, Anthony Boyle, Ayane, Togo Igawa, Matthew Marsh, Moyo Akandé, Sharon Yeung Pan Pan, Ken Yamamura and Igor Grabuzov, alongside other cast members.

Tetris will be directed by Jon S. Baird and written by Noah Pink and will run for two hours. Featuring the song The Final Countdown by Europe, the trailer starts off by showing us Taron Egerton’s character talking about Tetris, the game. As people finally come to terms with the name, he starts explaining the way it works and the way it was named.

He explains in detail how the name comes from the word tetra, meaning four in Greek and the word tennis. This harmless portmanteau became the linchpin for Soviet Union’s KGB and intelligence from both the western powers to ensure there wasn’t some large conflict starting because of a game.

Egerton’s character comes to this game with a passion that is unparalleled. Decreeing it the perfect game, he starts marketing it to everyone he knows, going around the country trying to sell it to people. The stylised blocks fall as he describes the game and glitching pixels make their appearance every few shots, while some people struggle to get the hint why they should be investing in this game in the first place.

Created by a Russian inventor, the protagonist goes to great lengths to cash in on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. In a hush-hush meeting with the programmers of the GameBoy, he promises something exciting. The rights to the game Tetris. Problem is, the Soviet Union has worldwide rights to this game and all other things they own. Getting something out of there was not going to be easy. Turns out, our man, the protagonist, was going to make his life difficult and go to Moscow to get the rights.

Fresh from the cold war, the Soviet Union is already sceptical of an American stepping foot on their soil, but when they find out that he is here to get something like this, things will get a little testy. People are warning him against negotiating against the Soviets meanwhile, he is still figuring out what they want from him in the first place. The Russian intelligence is on him, tracking his family, ransacking his place. And people are not happy with what he is doing.

The Soviet Union is not planning on being left behind. Our protagonist is not one to be following the rules. He is ready to do anything and even when he doesn’t have a plan, he will bring everything to the table in order to bring Tetris back. This film promises everything in a package. Some action, some comedy, some passion and some heartfelt political drama that will jolt viewers. The writing already seems impeccable, and if anything, maybe the stylised pixels should convince anyone to watch the film.
