Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 7 Review: Discussion

As promised last time, Richmond gives Total Football a go. Contrary to popular belief, Ted wants the team to execute the new strategy in their upcoming match against Arsenal, which ticks off the entire batch, but he leaves them with no choice but to “hush ” their) butts”. Beard takes over and goes over the history of the tactic while explaining that “Total Football is about letting go of your baggage and trusting your intuition”, which is quite poetic considering how much each character has been dealing with over the season.

A lot is going on in this episode. From the Greyhounds working out Total Football, with the quirkiest of tricks being brought out by Roy, who continues being an unpredictable character, to Nathan wanting to ask Jade out and Jack (Jodi Balfour) “love-bombing” Keeley and proudly proclaiming their relationship to the entire office. And in all of that blending mix, we find the season pushing forward to humanise Nate’s character more than ever, to the extent that we witness a different side (good side) of his relationship with his family.

As this interaction becomes all about warm exchanges between a son and his mother, then we also get a sneak peek into a healthy father-son duo dynamic through Sam (Toheeb Jimoh) and his father, Ola, with the latter being the “VIP” he had wanted to host at his restaurant. Furthermore, this relationship reflects the one Ted shares with his son, Henry, and with him overseeing the embracing moments between the former pair, knowing him, there’s no way he doesn’t miss his son either.

Keeley’s new budding relationship with Jack touches new heights, but Rebecca cordially reminds her to stay grounded. The new episode makes way for yet another conversation between the two best friends that not only sprinkle much-needed truth about the whole red Vs green flag discourse while also recalling that too much of anything and everything can swiftly turn into a sour story for another day, as hinted through Rebecca’s instances of her shared past with Rupert.

Episode 7 also makes it a point to inculcate a wide range of jokes into its narrative, some crude and some situational, making for a bunch that makes you chuckle. On the flip side, more serious matters are also taken into account as the story delves into the traumatic onus of hate crimes through Sam’s character while also teaching him and us to get back on and not to fight back but “fight forward” instead.

As we have it, the match with Arsenal arrives soon too. But before that happens, Ted invites the team’s fans to watch them practice and witness first-hand all the work (with numerous sessions of throwing up involved) that goes into making the team. This later ties into Trent Crimm’s epiphany following the conclusion of the actual match when he finally realises the true meaning of ‘the Lasso Way’. He sees exactly what has been rendered more evident with the tick of a clock. Ted has been building up a positive and supportive club-wide culture since beginning his career with Richmond in Season 1.

And if Ted is really to head back to his American home state later this season, as many fans have speculated over the last few episodes, it makes even more sense. He’s helped build a better playing culture among the team members and extends to that shared between the team and its hardcore fan-following. These will all become lessons that stay with Richmond longer than Ted does.

As it has become even more prominent now, the show is a lot more about the other characters, all of whom were playing on the sides earlier. It allows more than 1-2 people to lead the storyline. The ensemble cast is being pulled into the story at full capacity while gradually nudging and reminding us what Ted and his philosophies are about. The third season’s flavour and shape are different from the previous ones.

It’s a lot more mature and overtly inclusive with all its choices now than it was before. And so, in that way, it remains to be its uplifting and positive self, but since it’s covering a lot of ground now, things feel different and sometimes even relaxed in terms of how its comedy is shaping up to be this time around.

Ted Lasso Season 3 Episode 7: Favourite Moments

  • Keeley and Rebeccas’s discussion about “Love-Bombing” Vs being “Love Blind” (“emotional version of colour blindness where a person interprets red flags as giant green just-****ing-go-for-it flags”. While Rebecca also reminding her friend that “Shiny Things can tarnish.”
  • The Swaparoo – Will playing Coach Beard and executing his diction delivery flawlessly.
  • Sam’s dad finally showing up in person. The portrayal of their relationship – further revelation of why Sam named his restaurant Ola’s.
  • The entire Richmond team surprising Sam at Ola’s and helping him deal with the mess.
  • Trent Crimm finally realising what ‘the Lasso Way’ is all about, and Ted exclaiming “He’s our dork”.
