Stranger Things 4 Vol 2 Ending Explained

The second volume of Stranger Things 4 consists of two episodes, ranging from 1.5 to 2 hours. In the last episode, titled ‘The Piggyback’, we witness the group in Hawkins- Dustin, Eddie, Nancy, Robin, Steve, Lucas, America and Max hatch a plan to bait Vecna and attack him. According to the plan, Max would offer to be Vecna’s fourth victim (four is symbolic as Vecna’s clock chimes 4 times, and Vecna’s encounter with Nancy gave her the vision where she saw four lines cracking all over Hawkins).

Lucas, Max and America visit the Creel house in Hawkins, where Max and Lucas enter the attic, which happens to be the place where Vecna consumes his victims from the Upside Down. As for Nancy, Robin, Steve, Eddie and Dustin, the group heads to the Upside Down from the gate at Eddie’s trailer. Dustin and Eddie are tasked with distracting Vecna’s bats in the Upside Down for Nancy, Steve and Robin to sneak into the Creel house.

As Max confronts Vecna to take her and kill her, Eddie starts playing a Metallica song in the Upside Down to let Nancy, Steve and Robin enter Vecna’s hub and attack his physical body. However, it is hard to get Vecna to take the bait. Meanwhile, miles away, Eleven, who has her powers back, learns to piggyback on Max’s memory to save her from Vecna and also ultimately destroy him.

Eddie sends Dustin back to Hawkins with the help of the gate, but severs the ties to the gate and goes out to battle the bats to buy the group more time to attack Vecna. As for Hopper and Joyce, they get to the Russian facility, only to find all the Upside Down creatures on the loose, spreading bloodshed and havoc.

Eleven tries to get out of Vecna’s grip, and Mike is a big help, constantly telling her from the outside how much he loves her. Max’s good memories are all ruined by Vecna, so she is unable to escape, and Lucas, who is beside Max’s physical body, is attacked by Jason and is not able to put on the Kate Bush music as Max’s body twists and her eyes start to bleed. Dustin makes his way back into the Upside Down world only to find Eddie heavily injured and Steve, Nancy and Robin almost feel like they are dying.

Finally, when Eleven musters her entire strength, she attacks Vecna. However, it feels like it is too late as Max remains heavily injured, almost dying in Lucas’ arms. Steve, Nancy and Robin get the upper hand and attack Vecna’s physical body by setting it on fire, but he ultimately escapes. Meanwhile, Eddie dies a hero in Dustin’s arms.

Eleven tries to heal Max in her piggyback zone. Hopper defeats the last of the Demogorgon. Lucas sends America to call for the hospital as Max cries about not wanting to die in his arms. As all these events happen, cracks appear on Hawkins, the one Nancy had seen, and later it is termed an earthquake of massive scale.

At the end of Stranger Things 4, we see the entire group finally get together. Dustin expresses the news of Eddie’s death to his uncle in one of the most emotional exchanges ever. Eleven, Mike and others visit Max at the hospital with Lucas by her side. Hopper and Joyce are back and reunited with their kids. But, when everything seems to be going fine, Will gets a tingle on the back of his neck (like the one we see in the previous seasons), and ash-like snow from the sky falls.
