Stranger Things 4: David Harbour on Jim Hopper’s Return, “He Has to Struggle With His Inner Demons”

Stranger Things 4 Volume 1 is just a few days away from its release. It’s the first half of the final season of Netflix’s one of the most loved and popular shows. Created by the Duffer Brothers, the supernatural series stars Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Gaten Matarazzo, Noah Schnapp, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Caleb McLaughlin, Sadie Sink, Joe Keery, Natalia Dyer and Charlie Heaton.

Actor David Harbour plays the role of Jim Hopper in the show. In the last episode of Stranger Things Season 3, the makers left everyone shattered by showing Hopper’s death. However, in the very first teaser of season 4, the makers revealed that he is alive. He’s in Russia, in prison and not in a good state.

During the Stranger Things 4 World Premiere event, David was asked about Jim Hopper and what’s in the store for his character. The actor shared, “I am trapped in Russia in a brutally cold weather. I am in a brutal place, in a prison surrounded by horrible Russian guards. Also, there’s a literal monster in there. They are feeding inmates to these monster. On the top of that, Hopper has to struggle with his inner demons that he’s had the whole time.”

The Stranger Things 4 star added, “You see in fact that he can’t express things to the people that he love in his life like Eleven, except through letters she’s received posthomously. He needs to deal with these secret demons inside of him. So a lot of this season is about the external threat and brutality and also the internal brutality that Hopper himself does. It’s a dark season for me.”

At the event, David Harbour also answered some fan questions. One of the fans asked him his favourite episode of the upcoming season. The Extraction star said, “I have a big speech in episode 5 that I really liked and it really stayed with me for a long time. They wrote it 3 years ago and I had to wait two and a half years to say it because of Covid. Also, there is something else that happens in episode 8 which was very fun and enjoyable day of shooting. It was a lovely thing that as a fan of the show I’ve wanted for a long time. So that was a great episode to shoot about.”

Stranger Things Season 4 Volume 1 is slated to release on Netflix on May 27.
