Sound of Silence Review

In this emotionally intense film, Tan Jianci leads with a strong and emotionally layered performance that immediately leaves you hooked. The film offers a socially relevant theme inspired by real events, with its effective use of silence adding to the experience. The atmospheric cinematography, too, adds to the depth of the film and leaves you rather enchanted. The storytelling feels grounded and authentic, and thus, viewers will have an intense journey through this morally ambiguous tale.

However, that doesn’t mean that the film doesn’t have some predictable beats that will leave you rather disappointed. Plus, some secondary characters and plot points leave much to be desired. Overall, this is an emotionally exhausting watch that will hold your interest more often than not.

The film follows ambitious lawyer Li Qi, who, having left his CODA identity behind, is trying to make a name for himself. Although it’s not going anywhere for now, he decides to take up a deaf girl’s case whose brother, after falling for a scam, is being tried for gravely injuring a person. Although initially uninterested in helping Zhang, he finds himself in her company and eventually relents, taking up her case for free.

Why does Li go over to the dark side?

Over the course of helping Zhang against Set Sail Finances, he is recruited by the scamming boss, who gets Li under his thumb on the pretext of helping Zhang. Her brother gets a suspended sentence while she is given a scholarship in exchange for the case being swept under the rug, and Li, too, gets a ton of money out of the deal. However, the catch is that Set Sail might have given up on Zhang’s case, but through it, he has scammed other homes in the deaf community who now have nowhere to go.

Li’s situation here becomes morally ambiguous as he has been struggling his entire life to get somewhere, and now he finally has the chance to do so, even if that happens through twisted means. However, this results in him falling out with Zhang and his friend, Tang.

Does he have a change of heart?

The community’s trust in Li and Zhang’s change of situation pushes Li to rethink his strategy and choices. Although he is initially unhappy to see his luxuries go, he eventually makes the right choice and stands up against Set Sail with the help of the community, who come together to stand up against the scammer company.
