Something Very Bad is Going to Happen Review
Dark, dreary and almost impossible to see what’s happening, The Duffer Brothers’ Something Bad is Going to Happen chronicles a rather unfortunate wedding between Rachael and Nicky that starts to go off the rails after they go to his family’s remote cabin in the woods 4 days before the event.
The series, with 8 episodes, has the dread rolling in from its first minute, and if the stress of pulling off a successful wedding isn’t bad enough, the series adds horror elements that just make the experience all the more intense. Although one will question whether any of the Cunninghams own any light brighter than 0 watts in their home, considering how creepy everyone is, it kinda makes sense. However, it does fall into that tried and tested trope of a dark atmosphere in a horror show, regardless of whether or not that makes sense.

Lack of brightness aside, the series’s strengths are its great performances. Headed by matriarch Victoria Cunningham, played by the fantastic Jennifer Jason Leigh, the series makes you go off base just a bit the more you watch it. Every situation, every character just feels off, and you want to scream at Rachael to run away, soulmates be damned. It can’t be that good to risk being murdered… or something.
Speaking of Rachael, Camila Morrone is simply fantastic. She’s strong yet vulnerable, and you really want to root for her through everything. Sure, she can make some stupid decisions, but who wants to believe that their future husband’s family is certifiably insane? Adam DiMarco plays the groom, Nicky, and, along with the rest of his creepy family, it truly makes you wonder how people get over this sinking feeling and ever get married.

Something Very Bad is Going to Happen holds on to that anticipation and thrilling atmosphere throughout because the idea of not knowing who you are marrying can be a very unnerving feeling. The family vacation home is the size of the Overlook Hotel, and if the dark, snowy atmosphere wasn’t bad enough, Rachael faces every bad omen that one can face right before she meets this family from hell. Of course, the truth of the matter might (or might not) be more intense and complicated. You will just have to watch the show to find out.
In its rawest form, the series is about cold feet; it’s about that nagging fear in the back of your brain asking you whether you made the right choice – will this person I have chosen to spend my life with remain the person that I fell in love with 20, 30, 50 years from now? Couple that with, well, horror tropes, and you have a show that really does get under your skin. As if it wasn’t already too scary to commit in this day and age!
Final Thoughts

Something Very Bad is Going to Happen is a terrifying watch because it really taps into this innate fear of committing to someone we love and trust with our whole hearts and them turning out to be a serial killer or a cult leader. A lot is going on in the series that really gets under your skin, and if you love psychological horrors, this one really hits the spot. Just maybe more lights next time.
