Sold Out On You Episode 6 Review: Healing of the Broken Heart

In the previous episode, we see how Matthew and Eric’s competition visibly shows that they both want Ye-jin. They’re super chaotic when it comes to impressing Ye-jin. However, just when Ye-jin’s life seems easier, the live broadcast that she does collapses her mental health.

Highlights of the Episode

As expected, after Ye-jin’s broadcast, the aftermath occurs, but this time, instead of it becoming a huge scandal and ruining Ye-jin’s life, we see the emotional issue that was previously caused. Matthew hugs Ye-jin and comforts her when her world falls apart, demonstrating his deep care for her. Ye-jin finally leans on Matthew, realising she can finally free herself from carrying her burden alone.

However, as Eric witnesses it, his heart breaks. Seeing the woman he loves falling in love with another man shatters him. He is sad and disappointed, but he isn’t a person who’d do anything to break her romance. Instead, he maturely handles his one-sided feelings.

Then, in the second half of the episode, we see Ye-jin’s recovery in Deokpung Village. The rural setting and the slower pacing make the episode calmer and safer. Matthew taking care of Ye-jini is absolutely cute to watch. He is so awkward in his own way. His daily routine of checking on her health, giving her medication and silently ensuring she’s okay feels so cute.

Another highlight is Ye-jin reading a poem aloud, showing how emotionally she connects to it. We also see a scene where Ye-jin sees Matthew secretly safety-proofing his house to protect her from sleepwalking incidents. Ye-jin pieces together Matthew’s behaviour and realises that he is emotionally invested in her.

Performance of the Cast

Ye-jin handling her sadness, healing herself with the villagers and being pampered by Matthew, everything shows how emotionally she’s been breaking down.

In the previous episodes, Ye-jin’s character was portrayed vibrantly and arrogantly. However, in this episode, we see her exhaustion and vulnerability. The poem-reading scene especially highlights her ability to make simple dialogue feel deeply personal. Chae Won-bin’s performance as Ye-jin shines as she portrays it naturally. Even during emotional moments, she avoids exaggerated crying or dramatic breakdowns, which makes Ye-jin’s struggles feel far more authentic.

Ahn Hyo-seop, portraying Matthew, continues to excel at subtle emotional acting. He rarely has dialogues that express his emotions; his tiny gestures show how he’s feeling. And does Hyo-seop excel in conveying Matthew’s emotions? Indeed.

Eric’s actor also deserves praise despite having comparatively less screen time. The way he emotionally got shattered when he saw Ye-jin and Matthew’s hug shows how good an actor Kim Bum is. Rather than becoming jealous, Eric’s character maintains poise, and Kim Bum is the best cast for such a tender detail.

Themes Explored

The theme that was heavily shown in this episode is healing. From the beginning till the end, all the characters were healing themselves and each other. Ye-jin is the central focus of this episode, as she’s the one who deserves the most healing in this particular episode. She’s already drained by her selfish mother, and to make things worse, her career goes downhill.

Matthew’s presence plays a vital role in helping her recollect herself. Eric also sticks beside Ye-jin and shows his care without forcing his love onto her. Everyone in the village also ensures to keep Ye-jin happy. This shows how much healing is important for anyone, per se.

Direction and Editing

This particular episode’s direction deserves praise. Unlike the chaotic fun in the previous episodes, where pacing was fast, we see more of a calm atmosphere, a slow pace and well-packed healing scenes.

The cinematography also works beautifully alongside the rural setting. The natural landscapes, warm lighting, and cosy interiors of Matthew’s home enhance the emotional softness of the episode. The village now feels home to even the viewers. Editing-wise, everything seemed smooth, and the transitions were not too dramatic or unnecessary.

Flaws of the Episode

Some viewers might find this episode a bit slow. Though this episode’s pacing felt appropriate for its healing context, viewers who watch this series for its fun impact might feel less engaged. The episode overall isn’t too boring or slow, but it might not work well with the chaotic energy that the series has been providing so far.

Another flaw is the love triangle. I personally, and in fact, many viewers are feeling that Kim Bum’s talent is wasted. Being a huge veteran actor, his screentime feels less, and for a love triangle trope, he deserves more dialogue. The narrative is predictable, making his character feel unnecessary. This is the biggest flaw, and I sincerely hate it!

Final Thoughts

Instead of drama and loud intimacy, Episode 6 focused on the core complexity of Ye-jin, her healing. It was beautifully shown without exaggerated conflict and unnecessary twists. We see how the town becomes a safe haven for Ye-jin. Her chemistry with Matthew seems beautiful, and it is evident that in the next two episodes, they both will begin dating.

However, Eric’s screentime being too little makes this series feel empty. Given that the love triangle trope is huge, having his presence come and go quickly messes up the whole storyline.

Regardless, the series isn’t bad to watch, and it’s going in a better flow. If you’re not a Kim Bum fan, this series won’t affect you much.

Sold Out On You is streaming on Netflix.
