What Happened In This Episode?

Episode 4 resumes with Matthew pulling Ye-jin away when a car almost dashes her. After that, Ye-jin seems to be sleepwalking, given that she doesn’t answer any of Matthew’s questions. He follows her to keep her safe and notices how messed up she seems to be. He buys her slippers for her bare feet and even cleans up the broken glass mess in her apartment. We can see how tender and gentle he is with her. When morning arrives, Ye-jin doesn’t remember any of the good things he did to him, and so the tug of war between them continues.

Ye-jin comes to the village and has great fun with the local people. She joins them in harvesting corn and hears their stories. However, chaos occurs when Matthew hears that the corn buyer has pulled away from the deal and that the effort of the people will go to waste. This is where Ye-jin jumps in and pitches an idea to sell the corn via live stream. Ye-jin easily sells thousands of boxes within minutes, proving how crazy a marketer she is.

Just when things seem to go fine, she endures heatstroke and collapses, signifying how many ailments she’s carrying, and Matthew’s romance tension keeps flourishing, though we still have Eric waiting for her in the city. Eric is head over heels for her, and the chemistry he has with Ye-jin works out great, too. But we know who she is going to end up with. Anyway, toward the end of the episode, we see Ye-jin going to a rest stop where nobody seems to be. She thinks about her childhood traumas, and that’s when Matthew arrives right on time.

They share a hug, and she cries, relieving all her pain. He then tells about giving one medication at a time, daily meet-ups with him, signifying that he has started to care about her deeply.

Performances

Won-bin continues to show Ye-jin balancing work and emotional chaos. When she needs to be confident, she’s literally flowing with ideas and even proves to everyone how versatile she is. But behind that very confidence and glory, a small child is still weeping. Matthew is the one who truly sees her vulnerable side and how terrible her health issues are.

On the other side, Matthew is still a true sigma. His patience while handling her and his gentleness show how good he is. Behind his calm and nonchalant personality lies a gentleman who cares about everyone. He ensures that things work for everyone and always stays one step ahead. Ahn Hyo-seop truly is a remarkable actor.

Speaking of Kim Bum, it’s a shame he is getting so little screentime. Regardless, anytime he enters the scene, he makes my heart flutter. At this point, he doesn’t have to even act. His smile is more than enough to watch.

Themes

More isolation and loneliness themes are pressed in this episode. Healing seems to be the only option in this series, and we can see how Matthew seems to be taking care of Ye-jin on that. Ye-jin doesn’t tell about her issues, but continues to give her whole life when it comes to work. But it is to Matthew she breaks down for the first time and shows how empty she’s been feeling.

Another theme in this episode is unity. The villagers coming together to harvest under the scorching sun, the way they laugh hearing each other’s stories, and the way they take care of Ye-jin show that they work as a family and care for each other. One can never expect such love from the city people, but the villagers are always the best ones when it comes to true actions.

Direction and Editing

The direction is fantastic in this episode. From the beginning, where we see Matthew take care of Ye-jin, to the way the warm colours of the village are shown, we see how the editor and the director have played with colours to convey emotions. Towards the end of the episode, the hug, the rain and the cool tone add details to the emotional scene.

The editing during the live stream segment is sharp and energetic. It contrasts nicely with the slower part of the series, where we see how Ye-jin’s sadness affects Matthew.

However, the transitions between city life and village life can feel slightly abrupt at times. While both settings are important to the plot, the transitions do disrupt the storytelling. Regardless, it still works.

What is it missing?

While Episode 4 delivers emotional aspects of Ye-jin, the corporate subplot is still a bit blue. The business story involving L’Etoile and Gojeuneok, though important, lacks detailed exploration. Very, very importantly, Eric is missing. Eric is an important character in this series, but I feel like his low screentime is hugely affecting. Hello? It’s Kim Bum. A compelling actor. So, giving him screentime is extremely necessary to add more layers to this series.

Additionally, some supporting characters, like Jin-yi, continue to be a part of the plot without proper depth. While this may be intentional for future development, it does leave us with lots of questions.

Final Thoughts

Episode 4 is quite powerful. It’s an episode that doesn’t rely on dramatic twists but focuses on the emotional core and the relationship between Matthew and Ye-jin. Moreover, Ye-jin’s finding happiness amidst the villagers becomes a symbol of healing as she’s the one who has always yearned for love and care.

While the narrative still has room to grow, especially in its corporate subplot, the emotional core remains strong. Hopefully, as the next episodes come, we will have more of Eric and Ye-jin’s plot so that we can clearly see where things are going to lead.

Sold Out On You is streaming on Netflix.
