Shrinking Episode 6 Recap and Review: Jimmy And His Burden of Grief

Shrinking Episode 6 finds the troupe of therapists engaged in a surprise house party that turns out to be a drunken disaster for Jimmy and his friends. The episode highlights the reason for Jimmy’s overstaying grief and provides us with a glimpse of his emotional flashbacks. Notably, the latest instalment is directed by Randall Keenan Winston and written by Annie Mebane, with an average runtime of 31 minutes.

The dramedy series is created by Bill Lawrence, Jason Segel and Brett Goldstein and features Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams as Gaby, Luke Tennie as Sean, Michael Urie as Brian, Lukita Maxwell as Alice, and Christa Miller as Liz.

The official synopsis of the series reads as

A THERAPIST, JIMMY LAIRD, DEALING WITH SEVERE GRIEF BEGINS TO BREACH ETHICAL BARRIERS BY TELLING HIS PATIENTS WHAT HE COMPLETELY THINKS, RESULTING IN MASSIVE CHANGES TO HIS AND THEIR LIVES.

-Shrinking Episode 6 Recap Contains Spoilers-

Shrinking Episode 6 starts on an awkward note for Jimmy (played by Jason Segel) who has to unwillingly throw a house party for his best friend Brian, as a disguise for his proposal. The grief-ridden therapist agrees to a full-fledged public gathering after his own daughter, Alice wants both of them to be happy and normal. Moreover, the trajectory of the entire episode follows the consequences of the house party for Jimmy and others.

At first, we find the newly divorced Gaby informing Liz about the decrease in her libido, which has become a matter of concern for her ongoing dates. She also describes it as something which has been out of place ever since the end of her marriage.

Notably, the helpful neighbour Liz tries to reason with Gaby about the Libido thing, and also provides a peek into her personal experience to comfort the therapist. However, it is not the genuine advice but the idea of being her soul sister that excites her the most.

The episode also lays stress on Paul’s confrontation with his daughter Meg, about the severity of his Parkinson’s. And even though it was initially a happy call, the aftermath of the information starts to make him rethink the complete scenario.

As expected, Paul declines the invitation to the house party and sticks to the comfort of his sofa. However, when Meg informs him that she is coming to curate an action plan as soon as possible, he simply goes into a state of frenzy. The veteran therapist loses his cool and latches onto some gummy bears (gifted by Liz), which makes him gate-crash the party late at night.

Meanwhile, everyone at the party reminds Jimmy about his wife’s death, and how they were the perfect partner for each other. Something which soon starts to nag and compel him to revisit the dark phase of their marriage, right before its unfortunate end.

Furthermore, everything starts to come down for the drunken therapist, who then finds Alice and Sean sharing a drink with each other. This makes him even more fanatical, until the point of puking and spoiling the proposal for Brian and everyone.

The party also ends in a mess for Alice, who gets rejected (politely) by Sean, after her unexpected advances. Moreover, the brewing chemistry between the duo fails to take a shape but becomes an eventual success in the case of Jimmy and Gaby (a decision that both of them might definitely regret later).

The latest instalment of the dramedy series gives us complete reasoning into Jimmy’s personal loss, and also relays his perspective about the decision to not confront the same. The episode is almost like an eye-opener for us as viewers, to try and put more sense into his actions.

Harrison Ford is charmingly brilliant in the episode, as he walks through Paul’s second thoughts, in a state of near hallucination. Even though he appeared briefly in the instalment, for some reason (which I called the Ford Factor), he steals the spotlight in every frame possible.

Shrinking Episode 6 also ventures into the Alice and Sean story, which for now, might have reached its bitter end. Moreover, I still have some hope for the duo to reconnect and patch up in the future soon (which seems pretty irrational at this point). All in all, the episode was a complete emotional meltdown on gummy bears and wine, which might have made things complicated for Jimmy and Gaby towards the end.
