Mahabharata consists of perennial stories that have made up for the weighty Hindu mythology, and one of those many legends is now coming to life with its live-action revival in Shaakuntalam. Seeking its ultimate inspiration from the Indian epic’s Adi Parva section, the story found its grand adaptation in Kalidasa’s Sanskrit play Abhijñānaśākuntala or Abhijnana Shakuntalam, which puts together the meeting and union of Shakuntala and Dushyanta, followed by the former’s repudiation due to Durvasa’s curse.
The upcoming Telugu-language mythological saga is written and directed by Gunasekhar and produced by Neelima Guna, with cinematography by Shekar V Joseph and music by Mani Sharma. High on upscale VFX to depict the grandeur of Dushyanta’s Puru dynasty, the film stars Samantha, Dev Mohan, Allu Arha, Sachin Khedekar, Kabir Bedi, Dr.M Mohan Babu, Prakash Raj, Madhubala, Gautami, Aditi Balan, Ananya Nagalla, Jisshu Sengupta and others.
The epic love story will also be releasing in 3D, thus producing a goosebump-worthy ride for the audiences in various Indian languages – Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada. The titular couple of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta will be helmed by Samantha and Dev Mohan respectively. The trailer is nothing short of magnificent visions, thus promising a lustrous event for the cinema-goers in February. Be it the charming beauty of nature or the rugged ambiance of the battlefield, the video teases an explosion of high definition vibrance which will be best experience in 3D.
Samantha Ruth Prabhu even took to her Instagram recently to share the “toughest part” of the film “was maintaining grace and posture while walking, talking, running… even crying! And grace is sooo not my thing. Had to take training sessions for it!
She was previously seen in some films like the Telugu action thriller Yashoda (2022), the Tamil black comedy Kaathuvaakula Rendu Kaadhal (2022) and the Telugu action drama film Pushpa: The Rise (2021). Whereas, Dev Mohan was seen in the Malayalam action drama flick Panthrandu (2022) and the Malayalam romantic film Sufiyum Sujatayum (2020).
