Queen of Tears Episode 5 Recap

We are back in the emotional scene from the previous episode as both of them share a sweet embrace. Hyun-woo takes her on the cycle to find a dry place as it begins raining. They sit under a tree and Hyun-woo asks her why she came to his hometown. She tells him because his sister texted her that his father was losing the elections to 200 bowls of soup rice. Triggering her competitiveness, she brings steak and lobster to the fight, making Hyun-woo laugh.

Right then, his family scream out Hae-in as they search for her. Moved by their care, Hae-in stares at them as they express their relief at finding her. We go back to the Baek house where Hyun-woo and Hae-in talk about her experience during the elections. She tells him that the residents were all feeding her different kinds of meat but she felt loved when Hyun-woo’s mom called her ‘her baby’ and advised the rest of them not to be forced to eat. Soo-cheol and her mother see the video and she feels a twinge of jealousy at the relationship between Hae-in and her mother-in-law.

They share a sweet scene as he dries her hair with his ancient hair dryer. He also puts medicine on her small injuries, making her heart flutter. Just as they are about to kiss, Hyun-woo scurries out of the house, leaving her alone.

He spends time with his brother and Hae-in comes to find him. She hears him say that he doesn’t want to go back to the room unless she has fallen asleep, making her feel disappointed. We are taken back to the time when they lost their baby and Hyun-woo felt extremely agitated at Hae-in’s cold antics of removing everything related to the baby from the room. When questioned, Hae-in simply told him that there was no use for that room anymore. Feeling sad at her reaction, he decided to move into that room and broke down in his bed when he saw the lone glow-in-the-dark star on the ceiling.

Both of them remain awake for the rest of the night and Hae-in decides to leave earlier, keeping things as cold as they used to be. When they get to their car, Hyun-woo’s mom makes Hae-in feel warm by giving some fruits to her and advising her to rest as well. Feeling the motherly warmth after so long, she gives a sweet smile.

They reach their home and it’s raining again but Hyun-woo being a caring husband, follows her with an umbrella, making sure she does not get wet. As they argue about the previous night, she walks away from him and meets Yoon Eun-sung who takes her under his umbrella and walks away – leaving Hyun-woo feeling jealous.

As Hae-in goes to change her clothes, Eun-sung reveals that Hae-in’s mother requested him to stay at their guest house so that he can comfortably go about his business with Hae-in as well as Soo-cheol. Hyun-woo nods silently and walks away while Eun-sung tries to light a fire between those two by exaggerating his conversation with Hyun-woo to Hae-in.

Eun-sung finds out from Grace Goh that despite the frosty attitude between the Hong family and Hyun-woo, they always listen to what he has to say. In another scene, Hae-in and her mother share a cold conversation and the latter brings up the video of Hae-in and her mother-in-law. Hae-in walks out of the conversation, leaving Eun-sung to dine with Soo-cheol. The latter reveals some superstitions embedded in his mother, leaving Eun-sung feeling happy at the revelation.

On the other hand, Hae-in’s condition doesn’t get better. With her low white blood cell count, she is no longer eligible for the treatment in Germany, frustrating Hae-in. She also makes a sweet gesture as she buys 250 crates of vegetable juices from her assistant’s friend’s husband as she sees him concerned over his baby’s NICU bills.

Later, Beom-ja receives a beating from her father’s partner as the former tries to stop the latter from making dietary choices for her father. Here we see a little more about Mo Seul-hee and her ‘not-so-pretty’ side. Beom-ja tries to convince her father about the situation but he does not believe her at all.

In another scene, Hyun-woo sees Hae-in and Eun-sung together as the former looks sick and out of place. Giving him a cold shoulder, she walks away from him. Suspicious about her behaviour, Eun-sung requests Grace Goh to find her check-up results. At the hospital, Hae-in gets into a heated argument with her doctor where Beom-ja hears everything.

They share a heart-to-heart but Beom-ja reassures her that she will be fine, while she goes to her car and cries alone. The Chairman shows Eun-sung his collection of Napolean’s paintings as well as other historic artefacts. Here, we see Eun-sung as a child at the orphanage where the Chairman gave a moving speech but Eun-sung couldn’t care less. Back to the present time, he proposes to give him a rare Napoleon painting, making him happy.

Hae-in ends up leaving alone for Germany without telling Hyun-woo. Beom-ja informs Hyun-woo and he feels confused. He spends time with his friend but Hae-in’s interview (from episode 1) and her answer leave him feeling emotional. Determined to be with her, he sets off to Germany to meet her. In Germany, Hae-in gets to know that she is not eligible for her treatment due to her special circumstances and basically, her body is not ready for it.

Disheartened, she visits the historical site where she spent quality time with Hyun-woo. She gets a shoe-bite and right then, Hyun-woo swoops in to take care of her like a prince. He changes her shoes and she stares at him.

He apologises for not being around her when she needed him most and they both get emotional. She says that during this time, she thought all she needs is to be healthy but what she really needed was to be at home with him. Hearing that, he pulls her in for a hug and they cry their hearts out, yet again. The episode ends with them sharing a passionate kiss!

Queen of Tears Episode 5 Review

This episode was an emotional rollercoaster! Thankfully, we got to see more of Hyun-woo and Hae-in being a real couple where they acknowledge their feelings and communicate. Their sweet scenes left a lasting impact on us as Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won’s chemistry bloomed even further!

We also got to see more scenes of Hae-in interacting with her in-laws and we love it! Especially Hyun-woo’s mother who obviously dotes on Hae-in, it is heartwarming to see Hae-in experience the motherly love that she was deprived of for so many years. We hope to see more scenes of them together in the coming episodes, especially as Hae-in goes through more troubles with her ailment.

Eun-sung’s backstory unravels slowly as we see that he was an orphan who had an interaction with the Chairman but there is more to it than it seems. We hope to see more of Eun-sung’s true intentions and backstory in the coming episodes.

Queen of Tears is streaming on Netflix.
