Queen Mantis Episode 3 Recap

The episode opens with Jung-ho discussing the background of how Yi-shin’s reign of terror came to be. The shocking string of ruthless murders was enough to leave anyone shocked, but the background of the situation is also equally relevant.

In the present, Su-yeol and his team rush to save Kim Tae-seok, and when people almost give up, Su-yeol can revive him. He goes to Yi-shin to thank her for her help, and the two sit down for a conversation. We see the conditions that Yi-shin set for confessing to her crimes, including asking for Su-yeol to live a life away from her and her legacy. Either way, she asks him to stay safe from Gu-wan, considering he knows everything about him, and the thought leaves him uncomfortable.

Back at the station, Na-hee tells Su-yeol that Yi-shin might have committed another crime that they are unaware of, by the looks of Gu-wan’s murder board, and she insists on interviewing him once to confirm her suspicions. Su-yeol is suspicious but allows her, much to her happiness. Gu-wan, however, is in the hospital and is in no position to tell them anything.

Regardless, Su-yeol decides to look into it and goes straight to Yi-shin, trying to use her emotions against her and getting the truth out of her. When that doesn’t work, he threatens to have her sent back to prison if she doesn’t cooperate in the investigation. From there, he goes straight to another nightmareish crime scene and is heartbroken at not being able to stop so many people from dying. Elsewhere, Yi-shin puts dried leaves in a crawlspace above her bathroom and looks rather happy with it.

Meanwhile, Su-yeol and his team get a rather surprising lead and follow it to a rundown house. Inside, he finds items similar to those from his childhood, and it reminds him of his father. As things get more and more suspicious, Su-yeol gets the idea to check the nearby well and finds a dead body inside. Back at home, Jung-yeon gets suspicious that Yi-shin is still alive.

When this body doesn’t compare to the other copycat murders, the team has to wonder whether or not Yi-shin’s killing someone they have yet to know about is a real possibility. Just then, Su-yeol gets an idea and rushes back to his childhood home, climbing down to the bottom to find skeletons inside the closed well. He is left absolutely shocked when he realises that his mother killed his father and threw her wedding ring inside with the body.

He confronts Yi-shin then and there and is heartbroken when his suspicions are confirmed. But, in reality, Su-yeol’s father was an abusive drunkard who hit them both every night. In the present, Yi-shin can’t comprehend why Su-yeol would have such a huge problem with what she did because, for her, it was only natural to retaliate. Hearing his mother calmly discuss these things leaves him disgusted, and he is at a loss for words.

In the end, Su-yeol is overcome with emotions as Yi-shin taunts him to kill her and make his life easier.

Well, what a shocking turn of events for everyone involved in this mess. While the murders are interesting, I think it’s the thrilling relationship between Yi-shin and Su-yeol that truly makes you sit up and take notice. I loved this episode because it gives both of these relationships a chance to shine. Plus, Go Hyun-jung is simply fantastic in the drama and makes you sweat because she feels so menancing. All in all, the series continues to be very intriguing and I am waiting to see where we are headed from here!
