Pro Bono Episode 5 Recap

The episode begins, and we see that Gi-ppeum finds out about the video of David. She obviously becomes very suspicious of him and does some background checking. The information she finds is astonishing, as a colleague of hers lets her know how he has been hated by many in the past. David loves attention, and he craves it a bit too much. Thus, many would think of him as someone who stands out too much and does not help others just for the sake of it.

Gi-ppeum becomes convinced that David is in the wrong and, from then on, starts to treat him very coldly; she stops greeting him and openly ignores him, something David takes note of. Later, they all go for a fun football event, and there, David’s team gets absolutely beaten. Thereafter, the person whose case David takes turns out to be an international resident with a Korean spousal visa. Apparently, she wants to get a divorce from her husband just cause she doesn’t want to live with him anymore.

David refuses to take the case precisely because, according to Korean law, if a married couple mutually agrees to get a divorce, the wife can no longer stay in Korea and will have to go back to her country. David believes that Kaya must have an ulterior motive, and hence, he judges her even before knowing about her. This obviously does not sit well with others in the firm. After that, to get more background info on the matter, David and his team go to the village and directly ask others about Kaya. There, they get some conflicting information but also witness a possible case of domestic violence against her.

Following this incident, something changes within David, who decides to take the case. He also gets to know that Gi-ppeum knows about his video, and he panics, yet keeps his silence about the matter. Then we see how Kaya’s husband is mentally challenged, and when he heard false rumours about her, he tried to not only control her, but also confined her within the house. Apparently, he also strangled her and hurt her in the process. However, she claims that her husband is not a bad person at heart, and he did it by mistake, so she doesn’t want him to go to jail.

Following this, the case becomes more complicated as the husband claims that he pushed her, but not with the intention of killing her. He also says that he never choked Kaya. Her mother-in-law also claims that Kaya is doing all of this because she wants to get a divorce and live in Korea. Kaya even tried to get an abortion because she wanted to get out of that marriage. They claimed that she provoked her husband by claiming she wanted to go back to her home, which resulted in the violent reaction.

In this episode, the investigation drags on until the truth finally hits, and it rattles everyone. Just when it seems like the case might wrap up, one last-minute revelation blows the whole thing wide open, rewriting everything we thought we knew.

I genuinely loved this episode, as that twist surprised me. Once again, the series delivers a gripping chapter that absolutely lives up to the hype.
