What if someone told you that you could sell your youth for money? This is the question posed by Netflix’s upcoming German movie Paradise. In a time when everyone is so obsessed with youth, and the youth is so obsessed with itself, director Boris Kunz, who is also the writer alongside Simon Amberger, and Peter Koclya, brings us face to face with a future where years of life have turned into a commodity that can be bought. Well, ain’t that the “perfect” definition of taking control of one’s own life?
The debate on immortality and whether it is good or bad is, dare I say, beyond us. But science isn’t. So if through science a way is found that allows us to continue to stay young until we die, shouldn’t we utilise it? Then again, history has proven that everything that mankind has developed has been misused and taken advantage of. What if someone decides to take matters into their own hands? What if someone knocks down the door of your house and orders to have 30 years of your life taken away? Paradise is the very manifestation of all these statements and questions and more.

Paradise Cast
The cast includes Kostja Ullman and Marlene Tanzcik as Max and Elena, the couple around which the plot will revolve. Along with them, we have Iris Berben, Corinna Kirchhoff, Lisa-Marie Koroll, Alina Levshin, Lorna Ishema, Numan Acar, and Lisa Loven Kongsli.
Paradise Plot/Storyline
In the not-too-distant future surely, a multi-billion dollar biotech company (imagine OSCORP) named AEON develops a time donation program that will allow people to donate years of their lives in return for a generous reward. These years can then be provided to the elderly who get to be young again. While the whole process begins with you taking part in the AEON program, from the trailer it seems that AEON will reach a stage (probably due to some deal with the government) when it will also be able to take away your life years against your wishes based on the circumstance.

This is what happens to Elena, 38 years of whose is taken away as a payment of the debt she and her husband Max couldn’t clear in time. The fact that the court has ruled in its favour proves that AEON is more than just a biotech company. It is perhaps the brainchild of someone who has either managed to woo the government officials or has got hold of compromising intel that can be used against the government.
The movie is about how Max and Elena, who loses her youth and has gotten old, take her years back from AEON. It is a story that will bring the timelessness of love and humanity’s craving for immortality face to face; the process of which has, as bizarre as it sounds, already begun.
