Paint Trailer Breakdown: Owen Wilson Becomes an Unapologetic and Determined Painting Legend

Owen Wilson stars as the painting legend in this new film. Elements of the film are derived from the television painter Bob Ross’ life but is an extremely fictional account of his experiences and the Paint trailer breakdown shows how it goes. Apart from Wilson, this film stars Michaela Watkins, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ciara Renée, Stephen Root, Lusia Strus and Denny Dillon, alongside other cast members. It is directed by Brit McAdams, who also joins the filmmaking crew as a writer. It is produced by Sam Maydew and Peter Brant and shot by Patrick Cady.

This film is a comedy-drama chronicling the professional and personal life of the social personality Carl Nargle, as he comes to terms with public opinion, his rivals and the reason why he paints. As the trailer shows, there are light-hearted and intense moments that make this film a little magnetic to see. This script was on SlashFilm’s Blacklist for one of the best-unproduced screenplays of 2010.

Paint Trailer Breakdown

We start by seeing Owen Wilson’s character Carl give people instructions on the television on how to paint at home. The beginning is already captivating and the part where he said that painting is harder than rocket science just made it even more appealing. We are now drawn into the story of this man. Cutting from the television to his face is a wonderful way to break the wall between the viewers and the enigmatic figure and give us the whole image in the shot.

Following this small television segment, we see the painter now standing in front of multiple camera crew people and women who are incredibly interested in this painting lesson. After which, we see him jovially criticise his painting and warn the producer that there may be some calls coming because of this slight tree length issue. As he leaves the studio, a new painter named Ambrosia comes in and even though she is a big fan of Nargle, she is quickly becoming his competition.

She is gathering a fan following bigger than Nargle and putting his career in jeopardy. This is the only thing he knows how to do. Even some of the crew members on his show are defecting in favour of Ambrosia whose lessons take painting to a whole new level. When Nargle says ‘Good Night’ to everyone and just leaves, one of the crew members admits how she has never seen this man so mad before. This indicates how this character just has a wholesome, innocent charm and has rarely been seen doing something violent or untoward in his time at the studio.

Meanwhile, we see Nargle and another crew member gets closer when he reveals that she might be his muse. The romantic tension in this scene is electric, and the painting is not even fully revealed yet. The woman warns him not to let fame bring out the worst in himself and he retorts by saying how a real man never looks back, committing to the strong man, tough guy act. Ambrosia, on the other hand, has been swiftly climbing the professional ladder and is now getting her own merchandise.

The tote bags featuring Ambrosia only came into being because Nargle’s weren’t selling well. The rivalry is simmering and the anger is mostly one-sided at this point. She hasn’t given any indication of caring about this just yet. However, when he calls out Ambrosia for being rude to other women, she reminds him how he’s a has-been now, people don’t care about Carl Nargle anymore. He has been fired from his job and the person taking over isn’t making it better.

Carl has been lashing out and has been going through a slump but there are supportive people around him who ask him to get inspired by the art around him and create a painting that comes from his heart. The next few shots show his studio burning, him pitching a new painting and Ambrosia getting together with one of Nargle’s crew members. There is betrayal, playfulness, joy and desolation in this film. They are all told through fun-loving colours and beautifully contrasted cinematography.
