Outer Range Season 1 Finale Review: Strange Events, Unanswered Questions

Outer Range Episode 7 and 8 are now out. The neo-western mystery thriller on Amazon Prime Video stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, Tom Pelphrey as Perry Abbot, Lili Taylor as Cecilia Abbot, Imogen Poots as Autumn, Noah Reid as Billy Tillerson, Matt Lauria as Trevor Tillerson, Will Patton as Wayne Tillerson, Tamara Podemski as Deputy Sheriff Joy and Olive Abercrombie as Amy Abbott. The seventh and eighth episodes are titled ‘The Unknown’ and ‘The West’.

The synopsis reads, “Outer Range centers on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. A thrilling fable with hints of wry humor and supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown.”

Outer Range Season 1 Finale Review Contains Spoilers

We saw a fallout between Royal Abbott and Autumn in the fifth and sixth episodes. Billy Tillerson finds out about the hole and teams up with Autumn, who’s now staying at a hotel. Deputy Sheriff Joy gets more suspicious of Perry Abbott for the death of Trevor Tillerson. In Outer Range Season 1 Finale comprising two episodes, things go out of hand even more.

Billy and Autumn plan to destroy Royal by manipulating which will trigger the Abbott family head. But what’s weird is their wild kiss that happens twice in the last 2 episodes. One wonders when the two got so close to sharing their tongues and saliva. Autumn constantly talks on her phone with her mom, who’s not shown in the show yet. She informs her mother how she’s following the plan and needs more help. Who’s this lady who has sent Autumn to destroy Royal Abbott?

Thanks to Autumn, Perry makes yet another bad decision. However, his decision breaks Royal, who decides to kill Autumn. On the night when Royal is on his way to kill Autumn, a huge swarm of buffalos start running in the lands of Wyoming. With so many buffalos being set loose, one has to wait till the end to see who dies and who survives.

Outer Range Episode 7 and 8 keeps one engaged with Billy-Autumn’s equation and the curiosity to see Royal Abbott’s next step. However, the show didn’t attempt to answer any questions from the beginning. The hole is conveniently placed there, and people can travel through time and return. But how does it truly happen? Why is it placed there, and how did it get placed there and affect the Abbott family so much?

Outer Range Season 1 Finale Review: Strange Events, Unanswered Questions

If one starts asking the questions from the previous episodes, the list will be long enough. However, despite being a dramatic finale, the show ended on more cliffhangers. The makers need another season only to answer the pending queries of season 1. Otherwise, we are just watching people of Wyoming watching random things happening around them, and most of them are unaware of a giant hole.

Josh Brolin has earnestly played the role of Royal Abbott throughout the series. However, sometimes, you wish he could get in his Thanos mode and make sense of the annoying plot. The rest of the cast plays their part well. But actor Noah Reid stands out as Billy Tillerson in the last few episodes. He appears creepier the moment he starts singing.

Outer Range Episode 7 and 8 Review: Final Thoughts

Overall, the last episodes of Amazon Prime Video’s Outer Range had several strange events that tried to add some sense to the story. However, these big incidents only added more questions to the list of unanswered queries. It has always been a bizarre show, so it ended on a baffling note. If there is a season 2, let’s hope there are not many ‘plot holes’.

  1. Why did the mountain disappear? Even if something had been changed by Royal being there out of his normal time line, that would never explain a mountain being gone.

  2. I think I won’t bother watching the last two episodes. The show had great promise and it just collapsed on itself. Not only that, I really don’t care anymore.
