Outer Range Season 1 Ending Explained; Is Autumn Dead?

Outer Range ended on May 6 and has left many questions unanswered. The Amazon Prime Video show stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, Tom Pelphrey as Perry Abbot, Lili Taylor as Cecilia Abbot, Imogen Poots as Autumn, Noah Reid as Billy Tillerson, Matt Lauria as Trevor Tillerson, Will Patton as Wayne Tillerson, Tamara Podemski as Deputy Sheriff Joy and Olive Abercrombie as Amy Abbott. The last two episodes were pure madness and had shocking moments that added more to the confusion.

Outer Range Season 1: Ending Explained

In the last two episodes of Outer Range, we learn the connection between Royal Abbott and the massive hole/void. Royal shares with Perry how he had emerged out of the hole years ago as a boy. That’s how he met the Abbotts and now owns the huge ranch. Autumn tells Perry something about Royal regarding Rebecca’s disappearance. We are not told what she tells him. But Royal’s reaction and the revelation he makes to Perry prove that the Abbott senior is hiding something.

After listening to his father and learning about the hole and everything Autumn had told him earlier, Perry jumps into the void. This makes Abbott angry, and he leaves from there to kill Autumn. Also, Perry’s jump into the void leads to some disturbance. Suddenly, many buffaloes start running on the land, causing a lot of destruction.

Outer Range still 1

When Royal Abbott meets Autumn, the swarm of buffalos arrive there too. One of them almost tramples Royal; however, he escapes. Before he could kill Autumn, one of the buffaloes attacked Autumn. Royal holds her and learns that she’s no one else but his granddaughter Amy from the future. The makers didn’t make this point directly but have shown us the flashes.

Autumn being the future Amy makes sense as Cecilia loses their granddaughter outside when the buffaloes start running. After leaving Autumn lying on the road, Abbott returns home. Cecilia breaks down and says to him that their family is over as she loses Amy. But Royal says that it is not! We wonder what it means.

Outer Range: Is Autumn Dead?

Also, in the end, Autumn lies lifeless on the ground. But is she really dead? We don’t think so. Royal’s answer to Cecilia also indicates that she isn’t truly dead. These are all just theories and speculations. We need the makers to answer what has happened in Outer Range Season 1 with another season.
