Outer Range Episode 3 and 4 Review: Builds Confusion and Curiosity With Bizarre Events

Outer Range Episode 3 and 4 are now out. The neo-western mystery thriller stars Josh Brolin as Royal Abbott, Tom Pelphrey as Perry Abbot, Lili Taylor as Cecilia Abbot, Imogen Poots as Autumn, Noah Reid as Billy Tillerson, Matt Lauria as Trevor Tillerson, Will Patton as Wayne Tillerson, Tamara Podemski as Deputy Sheriff Joy and Olive Abercrombie as Amy Abbott. The third and fourth episodes are titled ‘The Time’ and ‘The Loss’.

The synopsis reads, “Outer Range centers on Royal Abbott (Josh Brolin), a rancher fighting for his land and family, who discovers an unfathomable mystery at the edge of Wyoming’s wilderness. A thrilling fable with hints of wry humor and supernatural mystery, Outer Range examines how we grapple with the unknown.”

Outer Range Episode 3 and 4 Review Contains Mild Spoilers

After the Stranger Things + Dark kind of ending in Episode 2, I had many questions about the mysterious hole. Outer Range Episode 3 starts with Royal Abbott talking to his granddaughter Amy about life on Earth, humanity, bloodshed and more. Deputy Sheriff Joy finds out about the missing case of Trevor Tillerson. She somehow finds proof that hints at one of the members of the Abbot family.

In Episode 3, we see Royal Abbott again going at the mysterious hole and doing something that’s, to be honest, expected of him. But if that wasn’t enough, the ending of episode 3 baffled me. It left me curious and confused about what was truly happening in the show.

I hope to find some answers in Outer Range Episode 4. But the makers build a good tension by shifting the narrative for some time from the sci-fi mysterious hole angle to the family drama. Deputy Sheriff Joy interrogates some of the members of the Abbott family regarding Trevor. Something big happens that leads the suspicions towards them.

Outer Range Episode 3 and 4 still

The episode also gives us flashbacks of some important elements that drive the narrative, especially connected to the Tillerson and Abbott families. However, the ending still of the fourth episode still wasn’t up to the mark. It is okay to have a cliffhanger, but the story so far seems to be more about ‘why did this happy and how?’

Outer Range Episode 3 and 4 Review: Final Thoughts

So far, 4 episodes have been released, and we are nowhere close to understanding the deal with the hole and everything that happened at the end of episode 2. Royal and Autumn’s equation might get more interesting in the upcoming episodes. But let’s hope we get some answers and are not left with more puzzles and bizarre mysteries.

Watch the show on Amazon Prime Video.
