Outer Banks Season 3 Review: Netflix’s Treasure Hunt Teen Drama Lost Its Way

Outer Banks Season 3 premiered on February 23, 2023, on Netflix. Created by Shannon Burke, Jonas Pate, and Josh Pate, the plot of the series surrounds John B and his friends entangled in dangerous situations following his father’s disappearance that is linked to a treasure hunt.

Starring Chase Stokes as John B in the lead role alongside Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, J.D, Rudy Pankow, Charles Esten, Austin North, Drew Starkey and more. The show consists of ten episodes with a total runtime of 50-55 minutes each.

The Netflix description of the show reads as follows:

On an island of haves and have-nots, teen John B enlists his three best friends to hunt for a legendary treasure linked to his father’s disappearance.

Outer Banks Season 3 Review

With beautiful locations and good-looking actors, the series has everything to become another fan favourite except for a good script. The story opens with the six teenagers having the time of their lives on a stranded island. However, their vacation in paradise cuts short after they meet an individual who leads them to their doom.

Instantly the story forces us to believe and accept that the string of coincidences that ties all the characters together is plausible. However, the same pattern repeating throughout the series is incredibly outlandish and makes it impossible not to question its credibility. Nevertheless, the instances and the ongoing storylines converge and relate to each other by the end, making it whole.

Often times it is laughable how things always seem to work out for the main characters despite being in the most dangerous and desperately impossible situations. And no matter what happens, they will find a way to party and chug a couple of beers amid the direst circumstances. There is no explanation or probable backstory for some of the major characters, which makes it difficult to understand their motives.

The breathtaking locations and the setting make up most of the faulty storyline. The viewers get a good idea of the lifestyle and experience the natives face in the area. Undoubtedly, the actors’ visuals have managed to attract most of the audience. The creators keep up with the initial class warfare subplot that displays two sides of the same place, the rich and the unfortunate.

The actors do not put out a compelling performance, and it hugely impacts the show. There are not many likeable aspects about the characters, creating a disconnect with the viewers. However, they cannot do much with a script that does not offer elements to elevate the characters’s personality. There is little to no character development, and it is frustrating to witness how their individual storylines are stuck in a loop, offering no changes.

A few new characters are also introduced in the series, but it fails to contribute anything to the plot. Charles Halford’s character, Big John, returns from the dead in the new season in search of the lost treasure. The sudden appearance of the character and the father-son reunion was expected to ignite emotions, yet it didn’t remain very interesting. Another major letdown was the show’s ultimate villain, who failed to rattle the audience in the slightest.

Charles Esten gave a splendid performance. He captured the essence of an evil, selfish man and remained in character throughout. Madelyn Cline also wooed the audience not just with her beauty but also her incredible acting skills. A few supporting actors also did a good job portraying their characters and did as the script demanded.

The action sequences are done incredibly well and are a stunning sight to behold. The scenes are extremely coordinated, which offers an uber-realistic experience.

Outer Banks Season 3 Review: Final Thoughts

The new season offers nothing new and seems to repeat the same storyline with a newly unearthed treasure in unknown territory. There is no character development or an essential plot point to keep the audience hooked and create a sense of relatability. However, the pleasing locations and the alluring visuals of the actors will manage to appeal to the viewers. The previous season watchers’ questions will be answered, providing a satisfying closure.
