One Night in Idaho: The College Murders Review

The 2022 Idaho murders left shockwaves across America because the incident just came out of left field for everyone. Of course, no one really thinks their loved ones will face such a horrible situation, but the university town, especially, had not seen a murder since 2015, so the shocking turn of events was nothing short of confusing. However, the docuseries focuses heavily on the parents’ and the other students’ feelings surrounding this horrible situation, which leaves your heart heavy from the first episode.

From the first episode, we go on a journey through the trauma of the four families losing their loved ones in a crime that they can’t make sense of. It’s devastating and confusing for the viewers as well, who can’t, along with the families, understand why something like this happened. Even if you know the outcome of the situation, the docuseries does a good job of bringing to the screen this fear of the unknown that will leave you hooked to figure out what happened in the college town.

One of the most interesting parts of the series is that it focuses heavily on the media circus that followed the incident, specifically how ravenous internet sleuths became to publicly prosecute innocent students who were already fearful for their lives. With no answers to who committed the murders and why, the internet became desperate to pin the blame on someone, publicly shaming and destroying the reputations of innocents who did nothing but exist around their friends. It’s done well and makes you fear for the future of our society. The vitriol people throw at others without knowing anything about them is honestly just heartbreaking and shocking.

It’s the parents, however, that almost brought me to tears. The series, as mentioned, focuses on the families’ testimonies to bring the devastation of the situation home. It almost feels personal every time one of the parents’ voices breaks or they look confused, 3 years after the fact. It proves how, regardless of the time that has passed, you simply can’t get over the heartbreak of losing a loved one, especially your child. The docuseries takes the situation seriously, and the grim atmosphere just adds to the sadness that engulfs the series because it is exactly that sad.

One Night in Idaho: The College Murders is a heartbreaking watch. The docuseries does a great job of holding on to the heartbreak, the confusion and the tension that surrounds the case. Bryan Kohberger, the accused, just agreed to the murders, and the docuseries comes at a very raw time to rehash everything that happened in 2022. This one’s going to leave you teary-eyed.
