OMG Music Video: NewJeans Brings New Sound and Illusionary Storyline

OMG music video is finally here after treating the fans with the B-side track Ditto, last month. With their first-ever comeback, NewJeans is determined to take over the year right from the start. Giving hints in their pre-release song with the kind of sound and storyline one should expect, the title track is beyond the predictions.

The super rookie group comprises five members – Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin and Hyein. Although they debuted in July of last year, with their hit songs like Attention, Hype Boy and more, they have built a big fan following from fellow celebrities and the public alike.

Even the group name is a figure of speech that alludes to the idea that jeans are a timeless fashion item and the group intends to carve a timeless image for themselves. The name is also a wordplay on the phrase ‘new genes’, referring to the group ushering in a new generation of pop music, which they certainly stand true to.

The OMG music video starts with the actor Kim Joo-heon acting as a doctor and asking the NewJeans members wearing hospital gowns, to tell their stories. Hanni tells us her story of how she was running around in a place, not knowing where she was but soon she realised she was inside an iPhone. In fact, she is even dressed up like Steve Jobs and literally shows us all the features of the phone from messages to weather and music.

It is definitely not a typical intro and leaves us a bit confused, adding onto the setup of a mental hospital, with the visuals that could be inferred as the member’s delusions. Like Hyein imagining a live bear while looking at a teddy bear and so on. Looking at the lyrics, it seems like a love song where they are happy to meet this boy, who is on their mind all the time.

But at the same time other people don’t know who is this guy and keep on asking – most probably it’s imaginary. The storyline is not completely clear for someone watching the first time and thus, the music director has added a bonus scene where the person is typing ‘Am I the only one uncomfortable with this music video’s material? Just show their faces and dance.’ Hinting at what many people might say after watching and shutting them down before that.

The song is composed by Jinsu Park, Ylva Dimberg, and David Dawood with lyrics by Gigi, Ylva Dimberg, and Hanni. The genre of OMG is hip-hop and R&B with UK Garage and Trap rhythms. The video is directed by Wooseok Shin (DOLPHINERS FILM). NewJeans members have once again shown their impeccable skills and choreography that will be taking over social media soon. The video also features a webtoon creator turned YouTuber – Lee Mal Nyeon, who has probably made the sketches for the mv.
