Old People Review: Utterly Befuddling!

Old People is a horror movie written and directed by Andy Fetscher and stars Melika Foroutan, Stephan Luca and Anna Unterberger, alongside other cast members. The movie has a runtime of 100 minutes.

Netflix describes the movie as:

A woman who’s returned home with her two kids to attend her sister’s wedding must suddenly defend their lives against older people on a killing spree.

Old People is such a weird vibe. It’s trying to be a horror flick, and sure, growing old is sort of like a horror show for most people – damn those wrinkles, amirite? Anyway, the movie is focused on Ella and her two kids, who travel to Ella’s sister’s wedding in their rural countryside home and discover something horrible.

Old People tries to do something new; it really does. There’s a certain oddity in watching old people be treated badly and then turn into zombies to avenge the bad behaviours and conditions that they have been subjected to in their retirement homes. In fact, it’s actually a fresh and rather fun notion to watch these frail people scurrying off with their wispy white hair.

However, in spite of having a new (and a little amusing) storyline, the horror flick turns into a rather silly watch. It has its moments of terror and some blood and gore, but mostly it’s really badly written, especially the dialogue. The latter is rather shoddy and hilarious when it’s not supposed to be. They feel rather forced and unreal; honestly, no one says the things these people are saying.

Old People

I don’t know whether it’s just bad subtitling or what since the movie is in German, but I’d like to believe that the dialogue itself is atrocious. You’d be taken right out of a serious or thrilling scene thanks to the absolutely odd and mismatched things the characters say. Plus, it also makes the interactions between the characters extremely surface-level and ingenuine. You don’t feel for the characters or their plight, thanks to how watered down the interactions are.

Moreover, there’s also this weird thing wherein Old People becomes a bit too easy. As in, the situations that come up after the initial freshness of old people becoming zombies, thanks to their hatred of the circumstances around them, are just too easy. The zombies’ behaviours and everything that they do are stuff we have seen before, and the situations that the other characters open themselves up to a sure-shot whack in the head with an oxygen tank rather conveniently.

It, thus, goes on to say that Old People, for me, is a rather campy flick. If you’re in the mood for something very silly and fun with splotches of blood here and there, then this is probably the way to be. The actors do a decent job with the rather sad dialogues that they are handed, and the old zombies do look creepy most of the time. I mean, the white dresses, wrinkled skin, and thin, wispy hair are sorta creepy at all times. Add blood dripping down their faces, and it’s gonna be a fun ride.

Summing Up: Old People

Old People

Old People is a silly (or even stupid) horror flick that wouldn’t even be a one-time watch for many. Regardless, it’s sometimes thrilling and mostly ok, just really cringy most of the time!

Old People is streaming on Netflix.

  1. I have a question to god: WHY?!??, thanks for the horror then i don talk about the movie itself but the horror of being surrandet by old people and become old, great scott i dident like this one one bit, the start was ok first murder then its a loooong drag to the next one, old people to me ARE SCARY, in day time at night oh lord in heaven stay inside at night people,

One time i was at work minding my own shit then i felt something breathing behind me, (i swear old people can teleport), i m turning around there i see a 100 years trollface……im dropping my stuff on the floor in 1000 pices of glass while im screaming full lung VRRRÆÆÆÆÆAAASUG HOLY SATAN AND DEVILS, thank god she was very deaf, she was sying ww…hhaatt…after i collected my soul accending from my mouth i tried to help her * i was still shacking*

She wanted to know where the coffe was, im like starring at the shelf we were standing 1,5 meters from, did she f..(beep) not seeing the WHOLE RED SHELF WITH COFFE?!?!?!?
im was kindly pointing her too the shelf, she starred at it for 5 MINUTES, then she asked what coffe tasted the best?!! I swear to god inside my head i wanted to DROPPKICK HER ON THE SPOT, but i calmed my nerve and bloodvesel on my forehead and just picked one, the suffering was over, phewewee, sudenly i heard a dunking noise, it coming behind me closer and closer, oh shit here going again, will maybe continued later if not fired/and jailed,

Anyway the way they treath old people here is ABSOLUTE HORRIBLE, if they do that to me im going out kicking and screaming for my life, i m not going to die at a hospitol like that, i want to give my body back to the natur, terrible movie about ouer futere we all gonna get soon or later,

A 2 STAR?!?? PATETICH: YOU MEAN: 0.5 is better for this one, thumbs down deleted from list, i dont like watching my future from hell.

  2. If you try and entertain the premise of being attacked by a band of old people (and read the reviews) then you likely won’t even get around to watching this movie. But if you do – be prepared for a refreshing dextrous chiller movie that works splendidly – even though it shouldn’t. In an age where chillers are two a penny this one is different. I loved it and I still don’t know why. I think perhaps because the cliches are left behind and the formulaic cliches of who lives and dies are left behind. A weird and terrifying movie. five stars for a brave movie and let’s face it – who doesn’t find old people slightly scary.
