Nowhere Ending Explained: With Anna Castillo leading the latest Spanish Netflix project as Mia, her survival thriller film has been directed by Albert Pinto. The movie also stars Tamar Novas as Mia’s partner Nico, Tony Corvillo, Mariam Torres and others in a close-knit cast of actors. Nowhere has been written by Ernest Riera, Miguel Ruz, Indiana Lista, Seanne Winslow and Teresa de Rosendo, and has a runtime of 109 minutes and released on the streamer on September 29, 2023.

The Netflix movie follows the solitary journey of a refugee pregnant woman who has to make it out alive alone on being separated from her partner in their attempt to fee a war-ridden Spain. Set in a dystopian totalitarian society, wherein women and children bear the brunt of the violence, the film maps out a bloody path that eventually leaves Mia stuck inside a huge vessel adrift in the ocean. She also faces the painful afflictions of pregnancy in this non-ideal situation that guarantees her no form of life support while barely leaving any hope for an uncertain tomorrow.

Throughout her struggle in solitude, Mia resourcefully makes use of the bare minimum elements available at her disposal. The vessel she was stuck in was originally a cargo vessel and contained huge shipments of products like air-tight Tupperware boxes, hoodies, and more Tupperware. However, ultimately what she first saw as a curse, later becomes the very gift of life for her and her newly born daughter’s survival.

Despite no clear picture of the future, Mia kept pushing till the end in the hope of someday meeting her partner Nico, but eventually he too became a victim of the design. Initially, he’d promised her that he would somehow rescue, but in the end, he reaches out to her one last time and conveys his final message to her. He calls on her smartphone, and luckily, even with the broken screen, Mia is able to accept the call. He urges her to to survive till the end to be able to start fresh someday.

And then he comes out with the truth about he’d been hiding in a container after sneaking into a ship, where he was unfortunately found. When he tried to run, the violent forces in power shot at him, and he’d already lost a lot of blood. He had no hopes of surviving, so he made that phone call to bid his final goodbye to Mia and their daughter.

After that, Mia completely breaks down, and her container is nearly submerged in water too. She somehow stretched out her time so far till 26 days of survival. She constructs a raft using the wood of the shipment boxes, which is supported by the Tupperware boxes to keep it afloat on water. The container is compromised further as more the water pushes through and creates more holes in it, thus pacing up the submerging process.

She tries to save items of grave necessity but also tries to hold on to other paraphernalia she’s emotionally connected to including the tattered photo of her late daughter, and the Snickers chocolate bar that Nico had promised to unwrap and eat only upon finally finding safe ground.

As she’s trying to get these things from inside the container, the whole thing starts to fully collapse under the water, while her daughter, whom she had safely tucked away in the aforementioned raft starts floating away. Mia nearly succumbs to her fate on being trapped inside the container and suffocating to death, but she cuts herself free and starts swimming up to the surface.

On reaching up, she fails to locate her daughter, Noa. Eventually, coming across her after a lot of struggle and the miraculous assistance from a huge whale swimming by, she catches up to her and ties her hand to the raft.

When morning comes, Mia admits her defeat, but is still alert enough to let lose some preserved fish to attract the seagulls flying by. They all start crowding above Mia and Noa, and this chaos catches the sight of a small family aboard a life boat out for fishing. They drive up closer to the scene and fish Noa out of the raft with no sign of anyone else beside her.

The woman onboard finally catches heed of a rope tied to Noa’s carrier and starts pulling on it. Gradually, Mia resurfaces from beneath the water and the same woman performs CPR on her endlessly. With no signs of life, she starts to give up too, but looking at the infant baby fills her up with desperate energy to revive her again, and so she follows the procedure, thereby resuscitating Mia’s vitality in the end.

When she finally gains consciousness, she asks for her daughter and holds on to her in a tight embrace as she starts crying after sensing a sign of relief after such a long time. So, luck, chance and her own resilience pay off in the end as both Mia and Noa are rescued.

The Nowhere movie is now streaming on Netflix.

  1. I’m 43 minutes into watching the movie, “Nowhere”, and I love it so far. It’s a scary situation to be in, But, Mia is being strong and very brave.
