Nineteen to Twenty Episodes 4-6 Review: Awkward Feelings and a Taste of Adulthood

Nineteen to Twenty Episodes 4-6 Review: Netflix’s newest Korean reality dating show, also known as 19 to 20 and Yeolahob Seumul, is created by Kim Jae-won, Park Su-ji, and Kim Jung-hyun. The MCs of the show are Cho Kyu-hyun (Single’s Inferno), Kim Ji-eun (One Dollar Lawyer), AKMU’s Lee Su-hyun, and Jung Se-woon. The show includes 8 participants, Moon Se-yeon, Lim Jung-yun,  Jeong Seo-yeong, Choi Seo-hyeon, Oh Sang-won, No Hee-ji, Lee Ji-min and Choi Ye-rin, with Jeong Ji-woo and Kim Pyeong-seok joining the group afterwards.

Turning twenty from nineteen takes only a year, but Netflix’s new Korean reality series shows this transition in a whole new light. The change from teen to adult can be weird, and the show will explore this change through a group of Gen Zs.

Nineteen to Twenty Plot

8 19-year-olds arrive at 19 School, where they will learn about the basics of adulthood that will come in handy when they turn 20 (adults). The whole endeavour will last for 7 days. But amidst all these new learnings, there is a rule that they will have to follow, i.e. no dating. Well, at 19 years of age, we are all vulnerable to our feelings, and it’s tough to disregard them.

Once the 7 days are over, the 8 students move into the 20 House. This is where they will put to effect all that they have learned in School 19 as well as will be allowed to date, make memories and celebrate the beginning of their adult life. The question that lingers is that will they be able to hold back their feelings for 7 days? Sounds easy, right? But is it?

Nineteen to Twenty Episodes 4-6 Recap

The first episode for this week starts with a slightly awkward and totally chaotic cooking class wherein the students start to get over their awkwardness and learn more about each other. I am not sure how much they learn about cooking but sparks definitely fly between some of the participants. Their talking heads, later on, are just so cute; some even mention possible honeymoon destinations, making the MCs burst out laughing.

After cooking class, the students head out on a field trip, and there’s palpable excitement among them. This is the first time some of them are out on a field trip from school since most of them didn’t get to experience these things thanks to COVID. Funnily enough, Su-hyun mentions that it is unfair to ask the students not to date after taking them to an amusement park!

Either way sparks fly as the students break up into groups and start taking turns on the ride, which ends up pushing some of the couples closer to each other while those watching are laughing. Shoutout to the Disco Pang Pang DJ, whose little commentary that we get to listen to is just extremely entertaining!

Anyway, after some good food and a walk, they all get to ride the Ferris Wheel, but not before a painfully awkward discussion surrounding who will go with whom. Either way, most of them get on the ride with whom they wished, and the conversations result in most of them feeling some sort of way toward their partners, whether good or bad.

The next day at school, the students are met with a reminder on the board – that dating is not allowed while they are studying there. Confused about who is being mentioned, the students start questioning each other playfully and afterwards, some surprising revelations come to light.

The second episode of the week starts with the girls discussing their Ferris Wheel rides, and most expressing that they are figuring things out and feel very confused about all of this. Anyway, today’s first lesson is learning the cha cha and, with any couple dance presented to a bunch of awkward teens, it’s very confusing and uncomfortable at first. However, most try to get a hang of the complicated steps, but the changing partners turn out to be pure chaos after a while.

We then quickly move on to another AMA session wherein the girls ask the boys different questions. Everyone asks everyone about whom they are interested in, considering they have all come to know each other a bit better since their last AMA. Either way, everyone’s answers are mostly vague and keep the girls and the MCs wondering whom the boys actually like.

Afterwards, the students discuss their time at their new school and what their expectations are for the next year when they all turn 20. The discussion comes around as the students get ready to graduate, and the next day, they all go to the 20 House to celebrate their adulthood together. They are all taken aback by their different looks, now that they are wearing their street clothes, and everyone individually comments on it after sitting down around the dinner table.

Thankfully, they learn soon enough that the dating ban will be lifted after midnight, which makes the MCs and the participants equally excited. As everyone gets ready to celebrate their adulthood together, the excitement is palpable. When the clock finally strikes midnight, everyone celebrates their newfound independence and what is to come in their lives. However, before that, everyone is shocked at the taste of the champagne and gets drunk too early after trying alcohol for the first time!

After running out of alcohol, the more sober group goes out to get more while the rest chill at the house. However, everyone makes it a point to talk to each other and expand their horizons beyond whom they had previously been interested in. It’s a fun time at the house as the contestants try out different alcohol to know their tastes. Unfortunately, they mostly hate all of them!

Either way, a couple gets ready for their first date the next day – Sang-won and Seo-hyeon. the others contemplate what to do with the changing dynamics and the slight sadness that the rest have not been asked out yet. The next day, massive hangovers galore as different people take up different tasks, and after some cleaning and a heavy breakfast, a note comes up on the TV – every midnight, dream dates will be revealed.

Afterwards, different groups start engaging in different activities. In between, Pyeong-seok asks Hee-ji out on a date. Everyone is curious to know what they should do about going out on dates, and the women talk about whether they should commit to a date or check out some other people first. In the meantime, Seo-yeong asks Ji-min out on a date, and he agrees to go with her out of pity.

That night, Hee-ji and Pyeong-seok go out while

Nineteen to Twenty Episodes 4-6 Review

Nineteen to Twenty continues to be a cute show about the complicated feelings surrounding adulthood. Although there are some moments wherein you’d be left a bit bored, it’s not the worst reality show out there. If anything, it definitely looks and feels quite innocent and at least people are relatable and try to be their own selves instead of hypersexualising everything.

That being said, I think the series’ first promise that they won’t be able to date becomes non-existent after the first few episodes, and this has turned into a complete dating show. I mean, that’s also fine; it’s just nothing new. However, the MCs are delightful and do make some nice points here and there.

Nineteen to Twenty is streaming on Netflix.
