Dropping at 12AM KST on July 7, 2023 (July 6, 2023, 8:30PM IST), the New Jeans MV captures the NewJeans members casting a spell and spread their sparkly loving agenda in their cartoon avatars. The girl group formed by ADOR (HYBE Labels) in 2022 exuded their loveable “girl next door” energy and instantly worked their magic on the general public. But, as of 2023, i.e. a year after their powerful and addicting debut, they’ve now entered into a collaboration with the Powerpuff Girls franchise, thus taking on a new identity.
Celebrating the 25th year anniversary of one of the most loved cartoons of all time by the Y2K kids, the five member girl group is now charting on an animated journey. While there may have been only three original Powerpuff Girl characters – Blossom, Bubbles and Buttercup – with Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein entering into this joint deal with the cartoon brand, we have five new additional characters added to the roster, making room for all the more fun.
Now out on YouTube, the NewJeans Powerpuff Girls collab serves us with a stellar music video of 3 minutes and 30 seconds, directed by Youngeum Lee and produced by MIN HEE JIN, which first features the quintet discussing their hypothetical superpowers. Their brief skit brings into picture a magic wand, which is basically the group’s own lightstick. As soon as it hits the ground, a spell transforms the girls in the blink of any eye. Visions reminisce their previous talks about superpowers, all of which get translated into their new animated world and life.
With “new hair, new tea, new jeans”, they take centre stage with their new-found powers in an animation sparked by dynamic set of primary colours. Hypnotic visuals take us on a spellbinding journey, and a picture within a picture, a story within a story unfold before their “magic wand” spins its spell again and they’re teleported back to their human surroundings. The song’s tune itself boasts as a calming and laid-back companion to the video, with a lo-fi hip-hop identity taking over.
Premiering as one of the pre-releases for their upcoming comebacks, this is merely the first video release that will be entertaining their fans. Following New Jeans, the Super Shy MV will be dropping a few hours later. The girls’ second EP is titled Get Up, and it will be consisting of 6 tracks – New Jeans, Super Shy, ETA, Cool With You, Get Up and ASAP. Out of these, the second, third and fourth tracks on the list serve as their triple title tracks for this comeback.
