The Barrier episode 3 review:

The Barrier episode 3 probably teaches us not to trust anyone and everyone, especially when you’re under an authoritarian regime.

The Barrier season 3 has three parallel plot lines that get almost equal amount of focus.

The experiments on the children grow more rigorous, as Hugo and Julia try to get Marta back. The poor children are subjected to inhuman experiments, while Alma has no remorse for them. However, she thinks of them as her angels, and has a very nonchalant vibe about the whole thing. It gives the kids hope that Alma and the facility are on their side, although that is not the case.

In the last episode, we saw that Julia is found by the police while waiting for Carlos, who faces a grim fate. She is, however, saved by Hugo, although their luck isn’t running too well. While taking care of Sergio, Julia comes across Marta’s discarded pendant, and gets to know Marta’s location. When she tells Hugo that, they form a daring plan.

On the other hand, Alex and Emilia get into some bad stuff. His affection for a nurse turns violent when she doesn’t turn out to be who she says she is. Emilia comes to Alex’s rescue, and chaos ensues.

The episode does not waste time in backstories or unnecessary plots. It plays with the characters and stories that were already introduced and established and plays with them. While you feel helpless for the children, you also understand Hugo’s desperation, and Alex’s frustration about the situation around him. As the story progresses, you get a very suffocating look into Alma’s greed for power, and the unfairness of an authoritarian rule which only cares about the rich and powerful.

The background score and cinematography are good, nothing mind-blowing though. However, it does the job to keep the suspense alive. The costumes are good, and do a great job at differentiating between the rich, middle-class and the very poor.

The Barrier episode 3 is probably the most action-packed episode among the three. If the sneak peek gives any indication, then we can be rest assured that there’s some great action coming our way. The principle questions that we are left with after the episode are – will Hugo be able to rescue Marta? What happens to Alex? Is Emilia safe? We’ll have to wait for the next episode to find out.

The Barrier episode 3 is streaming on Netflix.
