Lucifer season 5 is back with its hellishly good-looking devil. The series is created by Tom Kapinos and stars Tom Ellis, Lauren German, Lesley-Ann Brandt and D.B. Woodside.
If you’re wondering why anyone likes Lucifer, it’s not for those cases. Because I agree, the cases stretch on for far too long and are solved in the most meh way. Most of the time you’ll know who is the killer from miles away. No, this is a show that you watch for the drama that it provides. And in that respect, I am just a mere mortal. So here I am, binging season 5 for 8 hours straight.
Lucifer season 5 follows the titular Lucifer Morningstar as he is forced to come back from hell. The first episode or two is mostly about how the lovelorn couple, Lucifer and Chloe, have been hanging on without each other. After he returns though, there’s a lot that the couple has to sift through in order to have any semblance of normalcy in their relationship.
This season is going to be long. And it doesn’t help much that the cases that they work on are anything but exciting. For the most part, they offer no thrill and we just want them to be over with so that we get to the characters that we have all grown to love.
However, that’s probably also where the show does its characters a disservice. If anything, you’d expect Lucifer season 5 to pick up the pace, considering it’s its last season and all. However, with part 2 coming in (with 8 more episodes), the creators probably had to stretch it out as much as they could. So, character development is slow and relationship building takes too much time. And that’s probably why the ending fight sequence ft a very surprising (but still expected) guest.
If you have ever noticed, the series always has some or the other main anti-hero every season. Last season it was Eve, although, well, she was pretty nice. This season, however, we get Lucifer’s twin Michael. His character is probably the most interesting of the lot, barring Maze because she’s a badass.
I think it’s also a trope with it to forget plots that they introduce. Lucifer season 5 is no exception. We get really nice background on a lot of people this season, case in point Linda and Maze. However, their subplots, although heartbreaking, aren’t really explored at all. Maze still has some amount of hold, but I can’t say the same for poor Linda.
As I said above, the series has always tended to put in a lot of unnecessary plots and scenes that are not needed. And you’d expect this season to be tightly knit, but alas, there are even more stuff that are added that bring the season down as a whole. As an audience member, you’re forced to wonder a lot of times as to why some things are happening and how it ties to the plot.
However, the biggest positive that has always gone for Lucifer for all 5 seasons is its cast. Absolutely stellar performances from everyone involved. Right from Tom Ellis to Aimee Garcia (Ella), performances are so strong that you’d want to just keep watching. I especially want to mention Ellis’s performance this season. He not only plays the cheeky Lucifer, but also the bang opposite meek twin Michael, and he is absolutely flawless. And now you also get to hear two very distinct accents, and, let’s just say, I’m here for it.
Summing up: Lucifer Season 5 Part 1
While Lucifer has never been a flawless series, but I am happy that Chloe and Lucifer finally got together after 4 whole seasons. Yes, my high expectations regarding the plot were somewhat dashed, but the performances saved the day. Does that mean I am eagerly waiting for part 2 and will watch it the moment it comes out? Hell yes!
